The Freshest of Starts
On a whim, I took a solo trip to Scotland in March of 2018. My decision was born out of a mix of frustration with the state of my life and an equally strong desire to shake things up. I needed a new perspective, a fresh start for my 40th year of life. I decided that it was time to start waiting for someone to be my travel buddy and embark on an adventure all my own.

The Lost One
The air was getting thinner the longer that Brice climbed the Broken Peaks, Twin spires of rock and snow that stretched high above the clouds. Bird’s occasionally squawked or the rock would slip beneath his feet but that was the only noise aside from the wind that greeted his ears.

Koko & The End Of History
Once, the carriage would have been painted in triumphal red, but what remains of its past vivacity has faded into a diluted postmodern pseudo-red. It must have been around when the twenty-first century was still a futurist’s dream. Windows streaked with dust. Cracked panes. And at the front, an oily coloured heavy metal engine, rusted a little, the colour of autumn leaves. If Trotsky had been destitute, this might have been the type of ragged locomotive he rode to the frontlines of utopia. Its body is overwhelmed by graffiti, a mosaic of symbols that I cannot decipher. A funereal grey face dominates the back end, eye sockets empty and blind, and not so much a mouth to speak of, but two lips painted so as to remain forever closed. I wonder if this is the complete motif of communism that I’ve been searching for all this time.

Transhipping Take 1. & A trip to Stone Island
I'd really enjoyed my time so far on the Sapphire but from day 1 onboard I knew I'd be transhipping when the ship repositioned to Alaska due to their new state law concerning non-US citizens working ashore. Rich had left & with Jason the new senior onboard I'd be departing within the next two weeks but as usual we had heard nothing from head office on where I was going next and as I'd been working stupid hours I was encouraged to have a day of in port.

Marmal Hall
I could show you a horizon as far as the eye can see, stretching far and beyond your ability to even comprehend. I could show you the wide open skies awash with a harmony of pastel pinks, blues and purples. I could show you a lake once full and shimmering but now the home of rabbits, kangaroos, foxes and possums. I could show you my father’s crops standing thick and tall before harvest, a golden sea of wheat that would ripple in the breeze. I could show you the oasis in the middle of a desert – my mother’s garden that brings birds, bees, frogs and snakes to bask in what it has to offer. I could show you the farm I grew up on.
