My top hometown to visit
Hometowns bring back nostalgia of childhoods and simplicity. Sometimes they bring back sad memories. It is always in the eyes of the beholder. I have more than one hometown, per say, but the one I truly call home is deep in the mountains of North Carolina. A small quaint town called Banner Elk. My heart hurts, and trills at the same time for such a beautiful destination I get to call home.

Adventures in Concrete Biting
On one balmy Tuesday evening, I now understood why my childhood Danny O’ Day ventriloquist doll with the Edgar Bergen 33 LP to “Learn How to Be a Ventriloquist” would be of utmost importance. OR how sitting down with my dear friend Linda when we were kids with World Book Encyclopedia to teach ourselves sign language in order to outsmart and talk about our teachers right in front of them would come in handy. I would practice my ventriloquism skills on the neighborhood kids who admittedly were a great deal younger than me. I had them convinced Danny O’Day was my brother and he would “talk” to them and engage them with stories and jokes.

Did I just meet a Huldufolk
Meeting Isle of Skye Artist Bill Lawrence, maybe. I had just finished a hike in the Cuillins on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, I was blissfully exhausted as I drove back to my lodgings looking forward to relaxing with a wee dram in front of the huge fireplace.

Old soul city
Belgrade is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The magnificent City of Belgrade. A city of modern spirit and time with a history and tradition of seven thousand years! The first inhabitants of Belgrade are those from the time of prehistoric Vinca, 4,800 BC. It became the capital of Serbia in 1405. During its long history, it was demolished and burned to the ground as many as 60 times, and always, like the Phoenix, it rose from the ashes even more beautiful and magnificent. This is where all those masks and faces of Belgrade come from. When it is difficult to recognize them in pictures and postcards of the past.

My Hometowns
I claim more than one hometown, starting with the one handed down to me, the one I had no choice in choosing, but in which I took my first breath. That’s true for all of us until we eventually search out and decide for ourselves if where we lay our heads are hometowns.

Small Town, Big Heart
For those living in the small North Western town of Minden Louisiana, the first weekend in February is basically a town holiday. But not for the reason you might think. This town to-do isn’t for football or Mardi Gras, though there will be cookouts and people dancing in the streets. No, the reason everyone from Webster Parish and surrounding areas gather together is for THE MINDEN ST. JUDE AUCTION (I think legally it has to be in all caps, so everyone knows just how big of a deal this is).

Dungeness Crab Capitol Of The World
I was born in a sleepy little fishing town on the Oregon coast…well, in 1963 it was a sleepy little fishing town, now it is a bustling tourist hot spot. Newport Oregon is affectionately known as the Dungeness crab capitol of the world, and for good reason. Newport averages around 16 million pounds of tasty Dungeness crab yearly – though during the 2004-05 season they saw a record 33+ million pounds of crab come in on the crab boats. The crabbing industry in Newport is the main source of income for the area, with tourism a very close second. It is such a big deal that there was even a spin-off season of The Deadliest Catch filmed here, titled Dungeon Cove.
