Observing Burns Night (Travel from Home #7)
Scotland is possibly my favorite country (apart from my own). I used to have a map of the country on the wall above my bed. I’ve always wanted to celebrate Burns Night, but going to a Burns Night supper was definitely not in the cards this year. So I threw my own celebration and traveled to Scotland from home.

Wherever I go, I steal Identities
My parents were born in a country that doesn’t exist anymore. It was called Yugoslavia. They described her as a land of wonders, terrain so diverse and beautiful: rich fertile plains to the north, limestone ranges and basins to the east, ancient mountains and hills to the southeast, and extremely high shorelines off the coast to the southwest.

Canmore Alberta
At the beginning of the pandemic last year in March 2020 I made the decision to leave my home town in Edmonton, AB because I am severely immune compromised. I decided to spend the next several months in Canmore Alberta and the photos attached will show just why this is my favorite place in the world to go.

Tea in England (Travel from Home #3)
My Harry Potter group hosts a tea every year. This year, we shared tea virtually via Zoom on board the Hogwarts Express on the way to Hogwarts at the beginning of September. I took the opportunity to incorporate that into a personal fake trip to England.

Backcountry Monsoon
I loved camping as a kid, and on my 18th birthday my parents bought me a bunch of camping gear, just as I had asked. A canteen, a thermal blanket, flint, survival saw, lantern, flashlight, snake bite kit, a stove, and a kettle. I had this idea that I should try it again as an adult. Figured I’d like it. The only thing they didn't get me was a tent.

What Trees Can Teach Us About Community and Connection
For several years, one of my favorite daily rituals has been taking a walk through our property’s cathedral-like aspen grove intricately interspersed with majestic Douglas-fir trees. These arboreal walks sustain and enliven each day, from the buttery, yellow-leafed spring to the frosty, snow-covered winter.

Dancing and Dinner in India (Travel from Home #8)
I forgot that I wanted to fake visit China in February in honor of the Chinese Lunar New Year, and by the time I remembered, I was already halfway through my Bollywood movie. So I’ll just have to do China next year for the year of the tiger. Because my sister was adopted from India, I grew up learning about the culture (and mostly hating the food); as a family, we’d attend an Indian cultural immersion summer camp every year. In some ways, my fake trip there felt familiar, but there were also some new experiences to enjoy. So I had a lot of fun, even though I forgot my original plan.

The Unexpected Journey
A man was lounging on his couch, looking at the television without seeing it. He felt incredibly numb. He’d had a rough year to say the least, and he was definitely starting to feel the weight of a 9 to 5 job he didn’t enjoy doing anymore. He’d contemplated quitting numerous times, but never had the guts to actually do it. He didn’t have a passion to fall back on. Like so many others he knew, he was content just going through the motions, living paycheck to paycheck. He tried to convince himself that the few luxuries he could afford and the scarce nights out with friends were enough of an existence.

Home Is Wherever I'm With You.
Ilooked at this challenge and wondered if I should write about that teeny town in Wisconsin I grew up in. Or, maybe that other town in Wisconsin I currently live. Both have some great features. Lakes. Some parks. A few attractions and restaurants of course. Either might be adequate but does my heart get moved by either place? Not really, so I scrapped those two options. I then found myself asking, 'where do I consider my home?'
