Kodachadri Trek – A Mystical Adventure Through Karnataka’s Lush Heartland
Tucked deep within the Western Ghats of Karnataka, Kodachadri isn’t just a trek—it’s a spiritual and scenic journey through mist-covered hills, echoing legends, and untouched natural beauty.

If you’ve ever dreamed of trekking through ancient forests, chasing waterfalls, and standing above the clouds, then the Kodachadri Trek is your calling. Tucked deep within the Western Ghats of Karnataka, Kodachadri isn’t just a trek—it’s a spiritual and scenic journey through mist-covered hills, echoing legends, and untouched natural beauty.
Located in the Shimoga district, this trek brings together everything a nature lover or adventure seeker could want: thick rainforests, ridge walks, wild waterfalls, and a panoramic summit that feels like heaven’s doorstep. Here's a detailed, first-hand guide to help you plan your Kodachadri Trek adventure.
What Makes Kodachadri So Special?
Rising to a height of 1,343 meters, Kodachadri Peak is the tenth highest peak in Karnataka and lies within the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. But what sets it apart is not just its height—it’s the experience. It’s the kind of trail where you’ll hear the rustle of leaves, the rush of distant waterfalls, and the murmur of ancient stories carried by the wind.
The trail is a beautiful mix of tropical forest, grassy meadows, steep ridgelines, and rocky ascents. The summit is also home to the Sarvajna Peetha, a small stone structure believed to be where Adi Shankaracharya meditated centuries ago.
And on a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of the Arabian Sea from the peak—yes, it’s that magical.
How to Reach Kodachadri
To start the trek, you need to reach Nittur or Kattinahole, which are small villages near the base of Kodachadri.
By Bus: Take an overnight KSRTC or private bus to Kollur or Shimoga, and then take a local jeep or cab to Nittur.
By Train: The nearest railway stations are Shimoga or Byndoor.
By Car: The most convenient route from Bangalore is via Shimoga – Hosanagara – Nittur, which takes around 8–9 hours.
Tip: If you plan to descend by jeep, park your car at the bottom of the jeep trail and trek from the other side.
The Trek Route: From Forest Trails to Windy Peaks
We began the Kodachadri trek from the Kattinahole base, which offers the classic and most scenic route. Here’s what you can expect:
The initial part of the trail passes through villages and farmlands, gradually transitioning into dense shola forests. This part is shaded, cool, and filled with the sounds of birds and hidden streams.
Soon, you’ll arrive at the stunning Hidlumane Falls, a multi-tiered waterfall hidden in the forest. The climb near the waterfall is steep and slippery, but the view and refreshment it offers make it worth every step.
After the falls, the forest opens into rolling meadows where the real climb begins. The final stretch includes steep ridges and exposed rock paths leading to the summit. It took us about 5–6 hours to reach the top, taking ample breaks along the way.
At the summit, the Sarvajna Peetha sits quietly in the mist. A little further lies the Mookambika Temple, frequently visited by pilgrims from Kollur.
Best Time to Visit Kodachadri
The ideal time for the Kodachadri Trek is October to February. This is when the post-monsoon greenery is at its best and the weather is cool and clear.
Monsoon (June to September): Lush landscapes and vibrant waterfalls—but the trail becomes slippery and leech-infested.
Summer (March to May): Warmer and drier. If you go during this time, start your trek early in the morning to avoid the heat.
We went in late October, and the weather was perfect—mist in the morning, clear views by noon, and a chill breeze at the summit.

Where to Stay: You’ll find decent homestays in Nittur or Sampekatte, offering basic rooms and delicious home-cooked food. Many also help with arranging forest permits and guides.
