Kedarkantha Trek from Delhi: Snow Trails, Starry Nights, and the Summit Dream

This trek isn’t just famous for its 12,500 ft summit but also for the experience: the calm of pine forests, the charm of frozen lakes, and nights where stars seem close enough to touch.

If you live in Delhi, chances are you’ve dreamt of escaping the chaos for a while. For me, that escape was the Kedarkantha trek—a journey that took me from crowded bus stands to snowy trails, and finally, to a summit where the Himalayas stretched endlessly in every direction.

This trek isn’t just famous for its 12,500 ft summit but also for the experience: the calm of pine forests, the charm of frozen lakes, and nights where stars seem close enough to touch.

Getting to the Base Village

From Delhi, the adventure begins with an overnight bus to Dehradun (about 250 km, 6–7 hours). From there, a shared cab or jeep ride takes you another 7–8 hours deep into Uttarkashi district, finally reaching Sankri—a tiny, peaceful village surrounded by snow-dusted peaks.

The journey itself feels like part of the trek: winding mountain roads, glimpses of Mussoorie, and the Yamuna flowing alongside you. By the time you reach Sankri, city life feels like a distant memory.

Best Time to Go

Kedarkantha is known as one of India’s best winter treks. If you want to walk on snowy trails, December to early March is perfect. For those who love flowers and greenery, March–April gives you clear skies and blooming rhododendrons.

The Trail Experience

Sankri to Juda Ka Talab: The first campsite is a frozen lake surrounded by pine trees. It’s about 4 km and not too tough, making it a good warm-up.

Juda Ka Talab to Base Camp: The climb gets steeper but more rewarding, with stunning views of peaks like Swargarohini and Black Peak.

Summit Day: The final stretch begins before sunrise. It’s challenging, but when you finally stand at the summit, the 360° view of the Himalayas—with golden light touching snow peaks—is unforgettable.

Return: Descend back to Sankri and then onward to Dehradun and Delhi.

Budget and Essentials

On average, the trek costs around ₹9,000–₹12,000 if you start from Delhi, including transport, food, stay, and equipment. Many trekking groups operate packages, but you can also plan it independently.

Must-carry items: thermals, trekking shoes, gloves, torch, and at least 2–3 pairs of woollen socks. Power banks are essential as Sankri has limited electricity.

Local Tips

Start early on summit day—the sunrise is worth every ounce of effort.

Keep a buffer day in case of weather delays.

Carry cash as ATMs are unreliable in the region.

Stay hydrated even in the cold—it makes the trek much easier.

Why You Should Do Kedarkantha Trek from Delhi

What I loved about Kedarkantha is how much it offers in such a short time. In just 5–6 days, you get snow, forests, meadows, frozen lakes, and a Himalayan summit. It’s beginner-friendly yet leaves you with memories as grand as any challenging expedition.

For anyone in Delhi craving a real winter adventure, Kedarkantha trek is the perfect choice. It’s not just about reaching the summit—it’s about everything in between: the chai breaks, the laughter with fellow trekkers, and the quiet moments when the mountains remind you how small, yet how alive, you really are.
