Cause of Flight 292 Turn

JetBlue Flight 292 turned sideways due to a malfunction of the nose landing gear. During the flight, the Brake Steering Control Unit (BSCU) performed cyclic tests that slightly rotated the nose landing gear from its 0° position.

This caused two of the four anti-rotation lugs on the nose landing gear upper support assembly to fracture and separate, allowing the nose landing gear to deviate from the 0° position. Additionally, the BSCU system logic prevented the nose landing gear from centering, contributing to the problem.

After the incident, Airbus upgraded the system to address similar issues. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that worn-out seals were also to blame for the malfunction.
