Giving Back to the Ocean: My Reef Restoration Experience at Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives

Empowering Marine Life through Sustainability at Kandooma Maldives

When I first planned my trip to the Maldives, I imagined crystal-clear water, white sandy beaches, and long, lazy days in the sun. And yes, it was all that and more. But what truly stood out during my stay at Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives was an experience I hadn’t expected to impact me so deeply: taking part in their reef restoration project.

The ocean around Kandooma is vibrant, full of life, and unbelievably clear. As I snorkelled on my first day, I was amazed by the variety of fish, the gentle movements of sea turtles, and the stunning coral formations below me. But I also learned that this beautiful underwater world is fragile and needs our help. The resort isn’t just about luxury, it’s also about sustainability and giving back to nature.

One of the ways they do this is through their marine conservation program, and I was lucky enough to join one of their hands-on reef restoration activities. The idea is simple but powerful: guests are invited to help place coral frames into the shallow waters surrounding the island. These frames give damaged or dying coral a second chance to grow and provide shelter for marine life.

I met with the resort’s marine team, who welcomed us with warmth and passion. They explained that coral reefs are not just colourful underwater decorations, they’re essential to the ocean’s health. Reefs protect coastlines from erosion, serve as nurseries for fish, and even help regulate the climate. But rising ocean temperatures, pollution, and human activity have placed them under threat.

Hearing this made the experience feel even more important. We weren’t just placing coral; we were helping restore an entire ecosystem.

The activity itself was easy to understand, even for someone like me with no background in marine science. First, we learned about coral types and how the frames are made. Then, we waded into the warm, shallow waters with the team to carefully place the coral fragments onto a metal frame, which would then be secured to the seabed. The process was calm and thoughtful, with the team guiding us every step of the way.

As I stood in the water, gently attaching coral to the frame, I felt a surprising sense of peace. What struck me most was how approachable and meaningful it all felt. It wasn’t a complicated or overwhelming task. It was simple, yet powerful. And it left me with a deeper understanding of how much we depend on the ocean, and how much it needs us in return.

By the end of the session, I wasn’t just proud of what we’d done. I also felt more connected to the island, to the sea, and to the idea that every little action can help protect something much bigger than ourselves.

Later, I stopped by the resort’s Aqua Discovery Centre, where more information about their conservation efforts is displayed. I was able to see maps of where past coral frames were placed and hear about their success in helping the reef recover. It made me realise that this isn’t just a one-time activity. it’s part of a larger, ongoing mission to protect the Maldives for future generations.

Looking back, I can say that this experience was one of the highlights of my trip. It added purpose to my holiday and gave me a new perspective on travel. one that includes caring for the places we visit, not just enjoying them.

So if you’re ever planning a trip to Kandooma, I highly recommend joining the reef restoration activity. It’s not only rewarding and educational, but it also lets you be a part of something meaningful. You'll leave with more than just memories, you’ll leave knowing you made a small but real difference.

And honestly, that’s one of the best souvenirs you can take home.
