Dover Delaware
Number eight in the series of sightseeing in the US capitals

Dover is the capital of the small state of Delaware in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US. The state was named after the Delaware River. The city is located in the center of the state between Delaware Bay to the east and the state of Maryland to the west.

Dover International Speedway is a 135,000-seat racetrack. It was built in 1969 and is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the U.S. One of the attractions here is the giant mascot nicknamed “Monster Mile” NASCAR with a huge fan following is also featured here.

Legislative Hall or State Capitol Building is a neo-Colonial building that was once home to the legislature and the Chambers of Dover. Today it is a museum where you can see some artwork and the former courtrooms and houses of the legislature.

John Dickinson Plantation was the home of John Dickson who was known as the “Penman of the American Revolution”. He drafted the Articles of Confederation in 1778. The farm complex includes the brick home from the 1740s, outbuildings and a slave/tenant house.

The Delaware State House was built in the Georgian style and completed in 1792. It is home to the Governor’s presentation and ceremonial office and an 18th-century courtroom and legislative chambers on the first floor. On display, you’ll find building artifacts, historical photos and documents.

Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village is located on North DuPont Highway. The museum has a collection of artifacts, equipment, and memorabilia of Delaware’s farming history.

First State Heritage Park is one of the oldest urban parks in Delaware. The park hosts art, cultural, and live entertainment events on a regular basis. Visitors to the park enjoy walking or running and learning about the history of the state dating back to the 17th century.

The Biggs Museum of American Art is for both art and history lovers. This museum is dedicated to photojournalism. There are three floors of exhibits displaying local and regional art, period furniture, and historically significant memorabilia.

Dover Downs Hotel & Casino gets casino gambling visitors from the neighboring states of Maryland and Pennsylvania. This facility includes a harness racing track, plenty of dining options, and a first-class hotel. It is a fun place for entertainment.

Spence’s Bazaar is the oldest market of its kind in Delaware. This flea market attracts large crowds. You can find goods from Amish farmers and artisans. There are hundreds of vendors both inside and outside. It is also a great place to sample some of the local foods.

Delaware Seashore State Park includes Atlantic coast beaches. The park stretches between the Atlantic Ocean, the Delaware River, and Rehoboth Bay. It is popular with surfers, surf fishers, swimmers, and sunbathers. There are places for dining and lodging.

Killens Pond State Park is a short drive away from Dover, in the town of Felton. The park has many recreational activities like swimming, fishing, and canoeing. There are campgrounds, picnic areas, and an interactive nature center. This area was once home to Native Americans who left behind their homes and camps.

Delaware Museum of Natural History is located on Kennett Pike in Wilmington. It has permanent exhibits on the environment, plants, animals, and dinosaurs. Many of the displays are interactive. You can learn about nature in this state.

Wilmington and Western Railroad has been a tourist attraction since the mid-20th century. The railroad terminal is located on Newport Gap Pike in Wilmington. Train tours include local guides. This is a great way to explore and see the surrounding area,
