Bach Ma National Park in Hue

Ba Ma National Park is a pristine destination in Hue, boasting breathtaking beauty often likened to a rare paradise on Earth. At Bach Ma National Park, you can marvel at clouds swirling around towering peaks and embrace the majestic natural landscape.

Where is Bach Ma National Park located?

Bach Ma National Park is situated in Phu Loc District, Thua Thien Hue Province, approximately 40km from Hue City, covering a total area of 37,487 hectares. Bach Ma Mountain nestles beside the Truong Son mountain range, resembling a white horse stretching its legs towards the vast ocean.

This is Vietnam's only primary forest strip connecting the East Sea to the Vietnam-Laos border. Beyond its poetic scenery, cool climate, and French-style villas reminiscent of Da Lat, Bach Ma is also home to numerous rare tropical animal and plant species within its vast primary forest, featuring spectacular streams and waterfalls.

With a total area of 37,487 hectares, visitors can explore its rich flora and fauna, admire the majestic mountain scenery, and experience all four seasons in a single day.

Ideal time to visit Bach Ma National Park

Based on travel experiences in Hue, the dry season, from March to December, is considered the most suitable time to visit Bach Ma National Park. During this period, the weather is dry with no heavy rains, making travel and exploration convenient.

How to get to Bach Ma National Park, Hue

To visit Bach Ma National Park, it's most convenient to depart from Hue or Da Nang. From either city, you can take a motorbike or tourist car to the foot of Bach Ma Mountain to begin your ascent.

From Hue to Bach Ma:

From Hue, head towards Da Nang on National Highway 1A. Continue straight to Phu Loc town. Keep driving until you see the Park's logo (a circular green sign on the right side of the road). Follow Tran Dinh Tuc Street to reach the Bach Ma National Park entrance.

Note: When driving towards Phu Loc town, you might see a sign for Truc Lam Bach Ma Zen Monastery. Do not turn here, as that road leads to the monastery, not the National Park.

From Da Nang to Bach Ma National Park:

From Da Nang city, take National Highway 1A north for about 60 km, passing Hai Van Pass. Continue past the famous Cau Hai market by Cau Hai lagoon. About 1 km from Cau Hai market, turn left onto Tran Dinh Tuc Street to reach the Bach Ma National Park entrance.

From the entrance to Bach Ma Peak:

Upon arriving at the Bach Ma National Park entrance, you'll need to purchase an entrance ticket. The distance from the entrance to the peak is about 16km. You can trek if your health permits (the walk from the foot of the mountain to the peak takes approximately 4-5 hours), or you can hire a car (16 seats or less) at the park entrance to go directly to Bach Ma Peak.

The magnificent beauty of "paradise on earth" at Bach Ma National Park

Bach Ma Mountain boasts a wild, expansive beauty with lush, vibrant greenery, making you feel completely immersed in nature, enjoying the purest essence of heaven and earth.

Here, 139 villas were completed on the mountainside in 1942. At that time, Bach Ma became one of seven high-altitude resorts in Indochina. Due to wartime damage and the ravages of time, some of these villas now only remain as ruins. Those that are relatively intact have been restored for use.

From the peak of Bach Ma Mountain, a downhill path of about 2 km leads to Do Quyen Villa, exuding a serene beauty with classic European-style architecture.

A special feature that adds to the romantic charm of this place is the sau sau tree – a species with three pointed lobes. In March, the leaves gradually turn red, creating a stunning landscape for the national park. Many affectionately call them "Bach Ma maples" due to their resemblance to maple leaves (which have five lobes).

Bach Ma National Park sounds like a must-visit. The description of the clouds around the peaks and the diverse wildlife is captivating. I'm curious about the best way to explore the park once there. Hiking trails? Guided tours? Also, what are some of the rarest species one might spot? Planning a trip there soon.
