A Promise Shattered, A Heart Torn
The Echo of Unkept Promises

We spoke of forever
as if it were ours to command,
built our lives with words
stronger than steel,
faster than fire.
But promises,
like towers of glass,
were never meant to stand
against the storms we ignored.
You told me
we were unstoppable,
that love was the anchor
that would keep us safe.
But you forgot,
anchors don’t work
when the ship begins to sink,
and love doesn’t stay
when trust is broken.
I believed in you,
believed in us,
as one believes in the sun
after a long, cold night.
You promised me warmth,
but instead, you left me
shivering beneath the weight
of your empty words.
We built castles on sand,
foolishly thinking
they would never fall.
But the tides of doubt
rose high
and swallowed everything
we once held sacred.
I asked for honesty,
but you gave me silence.
I asked for love,
but you gave me nothing
more than a shadow
of what we could have been.
And in that silence,
I heard everything
I never wanted to hear—
the crumbling of trust,
the breaking of faith,
the sound of a heart
splintering into pieces,
each one too sharp to hold.
But here I stand—
not broken, but reborn,
not lost,
but learning the contours
of my own strength.
I have picked up the fragments
of what you left behind
and built something new,
something stronger,
something that does not rely
on empty promises
but stands firm in the face
of what is real.
I will not be defined
by your absence,
by the emptiness you left.
I will rise,
even when the world
feels heavy with grief.
A promise shattered,
a heart torn—
but here,
I am not undone.
Here, I am
a story still being written,
a soul still unfolding,
a heart,
still beating.

In "A Promise Shattered, A Heart Torn," the poem delves into the raw emotional aftermath of broken promises and lost love. Through powerful imagery and evocative language, it explores the pain of betrayal, the fragility of trust, and the heavy silence left in the wake of unkept vows. Yet, within the heartache, there is a journey of strength and resilience. The speaker rises from the fragments of their broken heart, learning to rebuild, heal, and reclaim their own worth. The poem speaks to the universal experience of facing loss, while embracing the possibility of renewal and self-empowerment.
