If city life in Bangalore ever feels too hectic, you’ll be glad to know there are plenty of weekend getaways within a few hours’ drive. From misty hill stations to serene waterfalls and coffee plantations, these spots are perfect for a short escape. Based on my personal travels, here are five of the best weekend getaways from Bangalore that I would recommend.

1. Coorg – The Coffee Hills of Karnataka

About 270 km from Bangalore, Coorg is a paradise for nature lovers. Known as the “Scotland of India”, it offers lush coffee plantations, rolling hills, and picturesque waterfalls. I stayed at a homestay inside a coffee estate, which gave me an authentic Kodagu experience. You can explore Abbey Falls, Dubare Elephant Camp, and Raja’s Seat, or simply enjoy the aroma of freshly brewed coffee in the misty mornings.

Best time to visit: October to June

Travel tip: Rent a cab or scooter for local travel; homestays offer the best experience.

2. Chikmagalur – Coffee, Hills, and Trekking

Chikmagalur, around 245 km from Bangalore, is famous for its coffee estates and trekking trails. I hiked the Mullayanagiri peak, the highest in Karnataka — the view from the top is absolutely worth the climb. Other attractions include Baba Budangiri hills, Hebbe Falls, and serene plantations perfect for a relaxing retreat.

Best time to visit: October to March

Travel tip: If you enjoy trekking and nature, spend a night in a plantation stay for the full experience.

3. Sakleshpur – Offbeat Hill Station

Sakleshpur is around 220 km from Bangalore and is perfect if you want a quieter getaway. Nestled in the Western Ghats, it’s great for treks, coffee plantation walks, and river-side camping. I went on a short trek to Manjarabad Fort, and the panoramic views of the hills were stunning. The Hassan-Bangalore railway route passing through dense forests is also a visual treat.

Best time to visit: October to February

Travel tip: Ideal for trekking and camping; carry warm clothes at night.

4. Wayanad – Nature, Wildlife, and Waterfalls

Just across the border in Kerala, Wayanad is 280 km from Bangalore and makes for a refreshing weekend escape. I visited Edakkal Caves, Soochipara Falls, and Pookode Lake, and even spotted elephants in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. The combination of history, adventure, and serene nature makes it perfect for families and solo travelers alike.

Best time to visit: October to May

Travel tip: Hiring a local guide for wildlife safaris or cave explorations enhances the experience.

5. Nandi Hills – Sunrise and Adventure Close to the City

If you want something extremely close, Nandi Hills is just 60 km from Bangalore. I left the city at 4 AM to catch the sunrise — the view from the top is magical, with clouds floating beneath you. It’s also great for paragliding, cycling, and a short hike around the hill.

Best time to visit: October to February

Travel tip: Reach early to avoid crowds; carry snacks and water as food options are limited at the top.

Final Thoughts

These weekend getaways from Bangalore each offer something unique — be it coffee plantations, trekking trails, wildlife encounters, or serene lakes. They are perfect for a quick escape to nature without spending too much time on the road. From my experience, planning ahead, starting early, and picking the right season makes all the difference in enjoying these destinations to the fullest.
