There’s something about Ghana that stays with you and that’s not just because that’s my birthplace! From the rhythm of the cities to the quiet awe of golden sandy landscapes you will be hooked. These aren’t just “photo ops”; they are moments that will move you and remind you why you love to travel. Here’s what stood out most across this rich, welcoming country through my visits.

For people with a head for heights – not me - the views were worth every step my friends assured me.
✨ 3. The Larabanga Mosque, Savannah Region
One of Ghana’s oldest buildings with a quiet understated power.
✨ 4. Lake Bosumtwi, Ashanti Region
I came having seen photos and stood there for hours taking in the serene calm views.
✨ 5. Lake Volta and Akosombo Dam, Volta Region
It’s massive — and the boat ride across is simply stunning.
✨ 6. Wli Waterfalls, Volta Region
Spectacular cascading waters amongst the thick forest landscape.
✨ 7. Boti Fall, Eastern Region
I thoroughly enjoyed getting soaked by being so close to cascading waters. It was glorious.
✨ 8. Umbrella Rock, Eastern Region
Strange and nerve racking standing on this finely balanced rock.
✨ 9. Independence Square, Accra
It’s not just a landmark — it’s our national symbol.
✨ 10. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Accra
A sombre and beautifully laid out reminder of the past and all that’s come since.
✨ 11. Makola Market, Accra
Chaotic market experience in the best possible way – colours, sounds and lots of banter.
✨ 12. Labadi Beach, Accra
Sunset here is a buzzing experience with live drums in the background.

City thrice holy
My visit to Israel in the 1990s felt like a homecoming. Don’t ask me why. A quick tour of Jerusalem took in many historic and religious sites. Not least the excavations beside the Western (or Wailing) Wall. Here, becloaked scholars read ancient Hebrew scrolls, praying with their voices, hearts, minds and bodies. Here, Roman street divides modern office and apartment blocks. Here, east meets west, Jew lives alongside Arab. Here the most holy of Christian monuments has a church that is bisected by a line cutting through two walls, floor, ceiling and alter. One side Catholic, the other Greek Orthodox.

Five—One Grounding
Five—Locked in a perpetual battle against my failing senses and reason, I fight to survive, to get through; I am afraid of... nothingandeverythingallatonce—...—my mouth is dry, and my muscles seize up... what can I see? I can see the birdcage and birds; I can see the watercolour my beautiful wife painted many years ago and unlocked her journey into art; I can see the empty mug of tea as it sits perilously on the arm of the sofa; how many is that now? Three down, two to go; I can also see a jackdaw on the roof of our neighbour's house across the road and a bookcase of potential—Five things you can see.
