First and foremost this author should mention that I have filed several human rights complaints against the Ghana government, Ghana police and Ghana immigration for racial and ethnic intimidation. Not only that but I was sexually assaulted by a Ghana police officer and when I reported it to Ghana's IGP no one cared to do anything.

I even have a partial recording of the Ghana police officer saying sexual things to me, asking me even to do disgusting things to him. His words were half threats but even worse he touched me in several areas of my body.

As the president of a women's equality nonprofit, I was going to register in Ghana as an NGO (non-governmental organization), I didn't. After speaking to many women, children and many men in the country, I felt that I would be met with physical violence in many areas of the country.

Ghana is always called safe and peaceful but unlike the United States or even Kenya getting police help is almost nonexistent. In most parts of Ghana you won't get any help in the time of need and Ghanaians know this.

In 2020 I was living in Ghana the EC (Electoral Commission), quickly announced the Akufo-Addo had won, even without all regions counted. She even said percentages out loud and ended with 110%. I don't think most Ghanaians even heard, cared or knew that it was not supposed to be 110%, however it was even written on screen.

This year December 2024, it took the same Electoral Commission several hours into the night (6 pm Ghana time), of the following day to announce the actual results. Even after the candidates had not only succeeded but made their speeches.

This caused several outbreaks of violence at the many counting centers around the country. Ghanaians ran to these offices, throwing chairs and storming buildings.

However after all is said and done, very few major newspapers bothered to mention that Ghana has had its first woman vice president. As a matter of fact only 2 major newspapers bothered to place her face on the cover.

This is the society of Ghana when it comes to women. Last years (2023) Ghana's human rights profile mentioned many issues women have in the country. For several years their human rights profile mentions that many women were bullied, harassed and pushed out of the political field.

During the campaigning this year someone threw an object at the motorcade of the female VP candidate and now Vice President Elect Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

When President-elect John Dramani Mahama stated that he would be running again many in Ghana took to social media to mock him and his VP pick. Sadly there are many things that happen in Ghana's society that makes it much like the ugly parts of the United States, many made sexist jokes and comments about Jane.

Which I knew was typical of the country as living there I was often confronted, verbally and almost physically assualted by random Ghanaian men walking on the streets. Ghanaian women would say insulting things out of earshot but I was able to hear much of their insults.

Most women would not stop staring at me, they stared the most, with bunched up looking faces. I remember one woman who was new to my building, was standing outside the front door to the building where multiple residents needed to exit. She stood in the way of allowing me to leave the building, she stared, her eyes huge, her face almost angry that I was leaving my own apartment building.

As I got closer to the exit, then stepped through the door she refused to move, her hand on her hip, mouth twisted I had to squeeze past her as I was in a terrible rush and didn't want the encounter of humiliation that often came my way.

Women in Ghana are mistreated, raped, physically abuses and often sexually assaulted. During 2022, 2023 and even 2024 women in Ghana were being murder at alarming numbers. The media in Ghana is the worst, it is the most useless form of information.

Then the many bloggers of the country seemed to focus on bullying, gossip, sex, sex, sex so much of the bloggers write about sex more than anything else. There is no wonder that the information coming from the country is not very informative.

Ghana in 2024 is still charging women 'RAPE FEES!'

Another thing many Ghanaians pretend doesn't exist, I am often attacked when I post stories of women being charged rape fees. I am often called a liar and a propaganda writer. The ills of Ghana are massive, under Akufo-Addo they were outright lawless. Many peoples human rights were violated, no one seems to care about that either.

A Ghanaian man with a human rights complaint against Ghana police was shot in the head, he died on the same day that the Ghana police submitted their brief in reply to his lawsuit. That is how horribly corrupted and dangerous Ghana is as a country.

There are many stories like these that are hidden from the world, Ghana should not be named the 4th most peaceful country either with the many conflict areas.

God only knows what happens to women in those areass.

Either way it was pretty sad that most of the newspapers in Ghana refused to celebrate her historic rise to power, especially in a country that has had only 14% of women actually hold political positions.

Lacey's House is an U.S. based nonprofit that deals with women's rights. I have worked in other countries like Kenya and Ghana. I wish to move into Burkina Faso where displaced women and children need the most assistance. Here is a link to buy me a coffee or the many ways you can support my nonprofit in helping women and children.
