Lumina Sophie 'Surprise' Roptus
On Martinique, an island mapped out by Christopher Columbus but later settled by the French, a baby girl was born on November 9 in 1848, the year slavery on the tiny island was abolished. Born on the Riviere-Pilote to a recently freed slave, Marie-Sophie, this baby girl was born during a very lucky time. Most of the slaves on this island were registered by one name and a number. Not surprisingly, after slavery was abolished, nicknames were still very popular. It was a racist tradition carried on even after slavery ended. Her mother having been known as ‘Zulma’ registered her daughter under the name Marie-Philomene Sophie. Later both mother and daughter were given the surname of Roptus by the island’s authorities. Everyone called her Lumina Sophie (a deviation of Philomene) and her nickname was ‘Surprise’.

CALL OF THE WILD Charlotte rested in her twin bed tucked away and alert, predicting the nightly visitor she had become familiar with. That night, the rain drips sounded loud, louder than ever before, knocking against the glass window. So heavy the rain falls, Charlotte is reminded of her Pa’s hollow guitar he used to play, sounding her and her younger brother Ted off to bed. Trying to fall asleep, she secured herself beneath the hand woven quilt her mama had given her. It’s soft texture made her smile briefly. However, she is unable to relax and enjoy the memory for too long because Uncle Pete would show up soon for his usual nightcap – at least that’s what he’d call it.

Georgiana was born into the Spencer family on 7th June, 1757, and was the first daughter to John, the Earl of Spencer and his wife, Georgiana, the Countess of Spencer. Everything They Don’t Tell You About Abortion
I never thought I would be in that position. From the time I was 19, I was told I could not have a child and had a low likelihood of even getting pregnant. So I never thought much about it. My period was never really consistent so I also didn’t think about that when I “missed” my period. But then my boobs started to hurt and grow, my chest always hurt and I felt nauseous. I took a pregnancy test and I couldn’t breathe when it said “pregnant” (gotta love those digital tests). I was freaking out. I was newly employed, living on the road and not to mention, my body was already a wreck. I called my best friend and she calmed me down then I told my boyfriend. We discussed it but settled quickly on an abortion. My boyfriend had never considered abortion and was even heavily against it. But with my health issues and current problems, attempting to carry a child just wasn’t a good idea.
