Women Like Sports, too
I love sports. I absolutely adore them. I have three teams I root for passionately and religiously. I have my superstitions the day the play their games. When I was much younger I issued to collect jerseys like it was going out of style. I have been to multiple games live and up close. I’m an entire woman. And a proud black one at that. I was born in the 80s so I grew up on the Showtime Lakers and the Lasorda Dodgers. I grew up a Raiders and Rams fan but when they both left Los Angeles, I found a new team to adore back in 1994…The Green Bay Packers. I was at my uncle’s house and the Packers were playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (back when both teams were in the same division), the QB of the Packers who wore #4 was just flinging the ball all over the field. His attitude seemed to be maybe Sterling Sharpe catches it or maybe The Bucs DB catches it. I guess we’ll all find out together. A gunslinger they called him. Favre was on the back. I said, “How do you pronounce that?” My uncle side eyed me and said it’s pronounced “Farv”. Brett Favre? Okay, well I like the way he plays. And also the Minister of Defense, Reggie White (I remember when he played for the Philadelphia Eagles) was on the other side? Oh I’m in!

Movie Review: 'National Champions' Lays Out the Case to Pay College Football Players
National Champions aims to tell the story of how College Football exploits players. It’s a compelling bit of polemic on behalf of the players as the story gives strong voice to the complaints that many have had regarding the millions of dollars given to coaches and the billions of dollars raked in by universities and conferences that do little to benefit the young men laying their bodies on the line to actually earn that money.

Week 13 Recap: Lions Win!
They did it! They finally did it! Like most things the Detroit Lions do, it wasn't easy. Week 13 saw the Lions hosting the Minnesota Vikings for the second and last time this season; the first meeting in Minnesota saw the Vikings win via a last second field goal, and also saw Lions head coach Dan Campbell tearfully hype up his team. As for this meeting, the Lions had a big lead, 20-3, but it ended up slipping away, bit by bit, with Justin Jefferson's touchdown giving the Vikings a 27-23 lead with under two minutes left in regulation.

The Agony and Ecstasy (but mostly Agony) of Being a Toronto Maple Leafs Fan
1967. 1967. 1967. 1967. Am I getting annoying yet? Imagine listening to that constantly from followers of rival teams when you’re a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. It was their favourite chirp, and we’ve heard it so often, it doesn’t even bother us. We’ve heard the best and the worst of insults for decades from haters, but the one thing they don’t realize is, nobody hates the Leafs more than their own fans.

What Went Wrong: Red Sox Bats Get Cold at Wrong Time
Three years ago, the Boston Red Sox won the World Series--their fourth since 2004. What followed was two seasons of disappointment, dismay, and the proverbial axe falling on certain people. Their 2019 season was immensely disastrous, as they went 84-78--24 games worse than their 2018 championship season--and missed the postseason. Pitching was the main problem, though if you asked then-GM Dave Dombrowski, the pitching was just fine. That statement was why I used the word "then-GM." Dombrowski was fired in September of 2019, less than a full season after delivering a championship to Boston. It was that bad.

4 winners and 3 losers from Week 5 in the NFL
"How 'bout they Cowboys?" This saying, which was first used by Jimmy Johnson in 1992, has been unquestionably the most irritating in sports for the past three decades. It's been a symbol of everything that frustrates 31 other Dallas fanbases for years. Over-exposure, endless promises that this is their year, and frustration at reaching mid-season wondering why a 3-5 team has still four primetime games on the schedule.

NFL Week 4 Recap: New York, New York, Brady Returns Home
It has been said that one can never go home again. Those who said that clearly weren't interested or well-versed in the story regarding one Thomas Edward Patrick Brady, Jr. I still remember when I heard the news that Tom Brady was leaving Foxboro, leaving the Patriots. I had heard that rumor for several months and never believed it; I figured he'd retire as a Patriot. In fact, my exact words were, "I'll believe it when I see it." Actually, I said, "Even if I see it, I still won't believe it." And those words were true, even a year later.

History of the MLB Postseason (Part III: Wild Card & Division Series Era - 1995-2011)
The introduction of divisional play in 1969 increased intrigue in Major League Baseball. The road to the World Series now included a playoff round known as the League Championship Series (LCS), which featured each league's two division champions facing each other for the pennant. All the while, the league continued to grow, as after the Seattle Pilots moved to Milwaukee and became the Brewers, baseball returned to Seattle with the Mariners, while the American League went north of the border and debuted the Toronto Blue Jays. In 1993, the National League added two new franchises: the Colorado Rockies and the Florida Marlins.

Should Have Watched It With My Dad
When I was incredibly young, I never understood why fathers watch sports. I have seen them in movies and on television shows. There is usually a father who is into sports. Of course, my dad (God bless his soul) had always been a huge fan of sports – especially football, boxing, and basketball. I am sure he watched other sports on television as well, but those were the three main sports I had always caught him watching.

A Tale of Two Bodies
It’s always the same experience. Rightly so, it’s ritual – it’s intentioned to be that way. Always the same silence that toes the line of uncomfortable and meditative. My hands are folded in front of me like in prayer and my mind is similarly inwardly focused. Coaches hang around, silent, sometimes occasionally muttering words of advice and reminders of the absolute necessities for enduring the challenges to come. The man in front of me is the only one whose words I regularly understand. He’s in a similar state to my own – rousing himself from his stupor only to impart words of wisdom and return to his task.
