On Friday November 28, SCC Flag Football hosted their 5th Annual Women's Thanksgiving Shootout at John Jay's Contest Field. Over one hundred women participating this year, the level of play and competition has gone up once again, according to League Director Adam Kern. But there is a crucial constant that has not run its course

“We are again raising money benefiting LOVE HOLDS LIFE Children's Cancer Society,” said Kern.

Run by Richard Senato, the Founder and CEO of the non profit was appreciative as always of his friend. “Adam is like a brother to me,” he assured.

Sisters only on this day, though, Katie Schulte was slinging it for the Peach Lake Pounders and deferred her efficiency down the field. “We got tall girls and we definitely got speed,” said the North Salem resident of her talented receivers.

Jamie Laurino definitely came down with those attributes but gave credit right back to her quarterback. “We call her Katie the Cannon,” said the receiver from North Salem.

Firing blanks on the sidelines, Jim Murphy could only stand down in the face of the players. “I’d be laid up already,” joked the spectator Dad.

Fun aside, he also assigned praise in the role model department. “It shows their daughters that you can play well at any age,” he boasted.

The sons took notice too. Watching his mom reach high at wide receiver, Colin Hanaburgh summed her strut up in one single word. “Confidence,” he beamed with pride.

The Saucy Mama's qualified just by stepping on the field. “We are a bunch of misfits,” said Juliska Martino of North Salem. “We all met this morning.”

The touchdowns not coming so easy, this team still made the most of the added weight that comes with uncertainty and unfamiliarity. “We’re having tons of fun,” said Stephanie Hendrick.

A bit more polished, Coming in Hot is no stranger to synergy and togetherness. “We’re a fun group of women with a lot of grit and determination,” said Bedford Hills’ Kim Lando of their long established team.

Spring, Fall, Winter and Summer, these women still have the same bottom line and even more so at this time of year. “There’s nothing better than waking up early on Thanksgiving morning to play football,” said Theresa Ricci.

On Par, Show Us Your TDs was on a collision course with Coming In Hot, and they did so with plenty of lineage. “A lot of us our Somers Football Moms,” said Jen Ecke.

So defending their teritory with pride, the cornerback doesn’t just have elephants carrying her flight into the secondary. “I have one eye on the target, and I’m like a dog with the ball,” clarified Ecke. “I got to go get it.”

Unfortunately, for Ecke, it was Coming in Hot that pulled down multiple interceptions, and the thievery had Brittany Deieso giving credit to her quarterback for converting turnovers into touchdowns. “She just lets it loose and makes it easy for all of us,” the wide receiver said of Ricci.

The trophy wasn’t the real reward, though. “We’re all proud to be here for a great cause,” concluded Amanda Defeo of Mahopac.
