Classic Movie Review: 'Field of Dreams' Major League Baseball Returns to Dyersville
No movie better exemplifies America’s love of baseball, and more importantly why we love baseball, than Kevin Costner’s 1989 Best Picture nominee Field of Dreams. With Major League Baseball having now been played at the legendary Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa, and my Chicago Cubs headed there in August against the Cincinnati Reds, I am in the mood to look back on Field of Dreams as part of my Summer of Classics Movie Review Series.

Dodgers' Kershaw loses a perfect game to the Angels in the eighth inning.
Prior to Luis Rengifo's leadoff double for the Los Angeles Angels in the eighth inning, Clayton Kershaw had pitched seven flawless innings for the Los Angeles Dodgers. On Friday night at Angel Stadium, Kershaw needed just 71 pitches to retire the first 21 batters in a row. Rengifo, though, halted Kershaw's bid for his second no-hitter and first perfect game with a crisp double down the left field line.

It's Time For Lou Whitaker To Be Inducted To The Hall of Fame.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum prides itself every year to induct the very best baseball players who have ever graced the diamond. Even with this, year in and year out debates of players who should be in the hall reside with the fans who believe a player is not being honored the way they should be. One of the most egregious cases of a player not in the hall is that of former Detroit Tigers second basemen Lou Whitaker.

The "New" New York Yankees The New York Yankees historically have been known as one of the greatest sports organizations across the globe. They have often had the reputation of flashing their wallets to obtain players to keep them the powerhouse they are known to be in the MLB. This is not exactly the case anymore. With new ownership being the late George Steinbrenner's son Hal, the spending has become look more like a money-ball technique. Hal and GM Brian Cashman have stayed under the luxury tax for over 6 years now, something the Yankees notoriously always paid due to their frequent spending. Although the Yankees have been spending lightly compared to previous years, they still rank 3rd in the league with their spending based on their tax allocation as shown by Spotrac below.

My dad was considered a “ladies man”, but the man did not understand ladies! So growing up with a man who did not have sisters and barely knew much about women was…difficult. When my mom met my dad, she was a single mom to my sister who was ten at the time. My dad really did not know how to deal with women, especially girls. So when I came, it was a challenge for my dad. Of course he was happy to have a daughter and he even named me, however he did not know much about raising a daughter. While we had our ups and downs as a little girl, there was one way my father and I bonded: watching sports.

After captivating audiences at the South by Southwest Film Festival earlier this year, the documentary Facing Nolan is headed to theater screens nationwide. Directed by Bradley Jackson, director of The Man Who Never Cried, Facing Nolan chronicles the iconic career of Baseball Hall of Famer, Nolan Ryan from his rise to fame in the late 1960's to his fireballing final years with the Texas Rangers.

Hiram Bithorn
Growing up in Puerto Rico, I quickly became aware of the island's favorite sports: baseball, boxing and...politics (oddly enough). Many times I heard stories of the heroes and trailblazers of these fields and of their accomplishments. They became legends to be admired and revered by generations of Puerto Ricans. They get monuments and stadiums named after them to further immortalize them to the people. The first such stadium I became aware of as a kid was Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan. This stadium became the host of many major sporting events and concerts. If a big-time band or pop star was coming through Puerto Rico, their show was almost certainly going to be at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. This stadium was even the "home" of the Montreal Expos for parts of the 2003 and 2004 seasons. The stadium’s history has made it one of the top prestigious venues in Puerto Rico.
