New Look Wolves Open Basketball Season with a Win over North Salem
With no starters returning from last year’s team, the boys basketball team completely turned the page against North Salem on Wednesday, November 29. So being a little shaky at the start was not a surprise. A 41-35 lead with less than six minutes remaining was, though. Unfortunately, the game went to overtime, and momentum and a lack of experience didn’t bode well. But these new look Wolves missed the memo.

Somers Wrestling Kicks off Season with Four Way Match at Peekskill
On Thursday November 30, the Somers wrestling team traveled to Peekskill for a four way match versus Hen Hud, Peekskill and Mamaroneck. The coaches figuring out the pairings, the outcomes did not count toward team records. But the decisions did register individually and a win for Ryan Ball didn’t have him getting too far ahead of himself.

The Airing of Grievances: NHL Edition
The day is here; a Festivus for the rest of us! Hardcore Seinfeld fans remember this very well. One of the episodes from the show's ninth and final season, "The Strike," revealed that Frank Costanza (played ever so brilliantly by the late, great Jerry Stiller) created Festivus as a response to the commercialism of the actual holidays. The holiday is celebrated on December 23, and instead of a tree, a pole is put up, as Frank finds tinsel distracting.

Avalanche Game 33 Recap: The Nathan MacKinnon Show
I repeat: Put Nathan MacKinnon's name on the Hart Trophy already! Following the team's loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, the Colorado Avalanche returned home for the holidays (well, close to it) for the first meeting against the Ottawa Senators. A little bit about the Sens; it's been hell for them at this point, and they just hired a new coach---well, sort of. Jacques Martin, who coach the Sens from 1996-2004, and coached them to the Eastern Conference Final in 2003, returned to the helm, with Sens legend Daniel Alfredsson as the assistant.

Avalanche Game 32 Recap: Shenanigans
The Central Division race has been crazy in the last week or so. The top three in the division has changed a lot, and after the win over the San Jose Sharks, the Colorado Avalanche took the division's top spot and held it...for 24 hours. The Dallas Stars surpassed Colorado when they defeated the Seattle Kraken, leaving the Avs to try to get back on top once again. The Avs went on the road for Game #32; the Windy City, to be exact. It's always interesting when the Avs and the Chicago Blackhawks get together, and this season is no different, mainly because of Connor Bedard. The first meeting was the Avs' home opener, and it was a shutout win for Colorado.

All I Want for Christmas is a Division Title (Week 16)
Ho, ho, ho! It's Christmas week in the NFL! I love Week 16, mainly because it occurs so close to Christmas, with actual games on the Christmas holiday (December 25) depending on how the calendar looks. We are entering the final three weeks of the season, and they are highly crucial. In fantasy football, it's deep in playoff time, with the semifinals taking place in most leagues. In the NFL, it's the real beginning of the end.

John Jay Girls Basketball falls 41-30 to Lakeland
The last time the John Jay Wolves faced the Lakeland Hornets, the girls pulled out a 55-44 first round sectional one win. A year later, the team roster has almost completely turned over, but a 10-9 second quarter game looked like a pretty good start for the young Wolves team. That is until inexperience caught up with the girls on Friday, December 1 at the Lakaland home court

Somers 21-7 Victory Over Niskayuna Sends Tuskers to Syracuse for Repeat
Photos and Video courtesy of and with permission of NYSPHSAA After falling behind 7-0 to Niskayuna in the state semifinals at Middletown High School, Somers had no offensive answer through the first period, and Coach Anthony DeMatteo refused to hide his displeasure as the team switched sides at period’s end. “They came out strong, and we were back on our heels,” he put words to his concern. But the urgency DeMatteo expressed did not fall on deaf ears.

NFL Week 15 Recap: Going South
The AFC South is getting hot and heavy! Week 15's Sunday Night Football spotlight was on the Jacksonville Jaguars for the first time in 15 years; since Week 5 of the 2008 season. The Jags, who are coming off back-to-back losses, played host to a Baltimore Ravens team who was looking to become the first AFC team to clinch a playoff spot this season. The Jags were looking to bounce back from their losses, as well as the injury to Trevor Lawrence two weeks prior, but unfortunately, the Jags were outplayed from the get-go. This includes a very dumb and questionable play at the end of the first half, a weird pass play that saw the Jags fail to get out of bounds and allow the few remaining ticks to run out with no points for Jacksonville.

Avalanche Game 31 Recap: No Bigger Boat Needed
Entering the second leg of a back-to-back, the Colorado Avalanche found themselves in third place in the Central Division. It was a three way tie in points with the Winnipeg Jets and the Dallas Stars; both of whom had a game in hand over Colorado. Game 30 was a disaster, but Game 31 was a welcome opportunity to return to the top of the Central. The Avs faced off against the San Jose Sharks, the second of three meetings this season. The first meeting was Colorado's second game of the season, a 2-1 win via shootout. However, a lot has happened in the last two months. This is a different Sharks team. While they're still not in a good position, they are playing with a lot of "give a damn" and it's led them to nine wins in the 20 games they've played since their horrendous 0-10-1 start.
