One resident, Keeley Black, recalls seeing several murals of Bryant throughout her daily commutes. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of them messed with,” she says. “People really respect these murals.”

The murals often depict Bryant’s iconic moments: his fierce drive to the basket, his championship celebrations, and, of course, his heartwarming bond with Gianna.

For many artists, painting Bryant is a deeply personal project. “Painting a big mural feels amazing when you’re done,” says Kay Luz, an artist who painted Kobe and Gianna on the Venice Beach boardwalk. Her mural features the father-daughter duo in their basketball jerseys, set against a Lakers-inspired purple background. “You’re painting something bigger than yourself,” she adds.

Jonas Never, another muralist, echoes this sentiment. “There are always a few athletes that cross over into almost superhero world,” he says of Bryant. Never, who has painted murals for several Los Angeles sports teams, created one of Bryant near what was then the Staples Center during the 2015-16 NBA season—Kobe’s last as a professional player.

The mural, which shows Bryant pulling on his gold Lakers jersey in celebration, became a spontaneous gathering spot after his death. For weeks, fans flocked to the site to leave flowers, candles, and handwritten notes. Even now, it remains a destination for both locals and tourists.

“I think the proximity to the Staples Center and the fact that it wasn’t chasing what happened—it was already there—gave it some credibility,” says Never.

Kobe Bryant wasn’t just a basketball player—he was a cultural icon. Over his 20-year career with the Lakers, he won five NBA championships, earned 18 All-Star selections, and helped bring the game to a global audience. “L.A. is such a big, spread-out city,” Never explains, “and seeing everyone come together over Kobe at that mural was really awesome.”
