Kobe Bryant’s Legacy Lives On Through Murals Across Los Angeles

"How Kobe Bryant’s Murals Keep His Legacy Alive in the Heart of Los Angeles"

By JayuPublished 12 months ago 3 min read

Five years after Kobe Bryant’s tragic death, his presence continues to loom large over Los Angeles—not just in memories, but also in the countless murals that honor him. These artworks, found on gym walls, street corners, and shopping districts, have become enduring symbols of the basketball legend’s impact on the city and the world.

One of the most well-known murals features Bryant and his daughter Gianna, both with angelic wings, surrounded by clouds. Located on the side of a downtown Los Angeles gym, the mural has stood untouched since it was painted. Nearby, the words “Do not touch this mural” seem unnecessary—no one dares to vandalize it.

Bryant’s tragic death in a helicopter crash in January 2020, which also claimed the lives of Gianna and seven others, left Los Angeles heartbroken. However, the murals that popped up in the aftermath have helped preserve his memory. Today, there are over 600 murals honoring Bryant worldwide, with the majority located in Southern California.

A City of Murals

In Los Angeles, it’s almost impossible to walk through a neighborhood without encountering a mural of Kobe Bryant. From Venice Beach to Sunset Boulevard, his image has become a staple of the city’s streetscape.

One resident, Keeley Black, recalls seeing several murals of Bryant throughout her daily commutes. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of them messed with,” she says. “People really respect these murals.”

These artworks are more than just paintings—they’re a way for fans and artists to connect with the legacy of someone who inspired millions. The murals often depict Bryant’s iconic moments: his fierce drive to the basket, his championship celebrations, and, of course, his heartwarming bond with Gianna.

Art with a Purpose

For many artists, painting Bryant is a deeply personal project. “Painting a big mural feels amazing when you’re done,” says Kay Luz, an artist who painted Kobe and Gianna on the Venice Beach boardwalk. Her mural features the father-daughter duo in their basketball jerseys, set against a Lakers-inspired purple background. “You’re painting something bigger than yourself,” she adds.

Jonas Never, another muralist, echoes this sentiment. “There are always a few athletes that cross over into almost superhero world,” he says of Bryant. Never, who has painted murals for several Los Angeles sports teams, created one of Bryant near what was then the Staples Center during the 2015-16 NBA season—Kobe’s last as a professional player.

The mural, which shows Bryant pulling on his gold Lakers jersey in celebration, became a spontaneous gathering spot after his death. For weeks, fans flocked to the site to leave flowers, candles, and handwritten notes. Even now, it remains a destination for both locals and tourists.

“I think the proximity to the Staples Center and the fact that it wasn’t chasing what happened—it was already there—gave it some credibility,” says Never.

Why Kobe Still Resonates

Kobe Bryant wasn’t just a basketball player—he was a cultural icon. Over his 20-year career with the Lakers, he won five NBA championships, earned 18 All-Star selections, and helped bring the game to a global audience. He also inspired a generation of athletes with his “Mamba Mentality,” a philosophy of relentless hard work and dedication.

His influence extended far beyond sports. Bryant’s work ethic and competitive spirit made him a hero to people from all walks of life. This universal appeal is why so many feel compelled to honor him, and why his murals remain untouched and respected.

“L.A. is such a big, spread-out city,” Never explains, “and seeing everyone come together over Kobe at that mural was really awesome.”

A Legacy in Art

Bryant’s murals serve as more than just tributes—they’re places for reflection, inspiration, and community. Whether it’s the artist pouring their emotions onto a wall or the fan pausing to take a photo, these murals keep Kobe’s spirit alive in a tangible way.

In a city as vast and diverse as Los Angeles, it’s rare for someone to unite people the way Bryant did. But through these murals, his legacy continues to bring people together, reminding them of his greatness both on and off the court.

Even as time passes, it’s clear that Kobe Bryant’s impact on Los Angeles—and the world—is far from fading. Every mural tells a story of admiration, respect, and love, ensuring that the “Black Mamba” and his daughter Gianna will forever reign in the hearts of their fans.
