2025 Red Sox Trade Deadline

2025 Red Sox Trades

So, the 2025 Red Sox trade deadline is at 6:00 p.m. EST on July 31st. In the past, the deadline was at 4:00 p.m. However, this year, the Commissioner has set the date for July 28th – August 3rd to avoid any conflict with any teams who have afternoon games.

2025 Red Sox Trade Deadline

When the season started, I had high expectations for the team to win the division. Visit my 2025 Red Sox Season Begins Today post to learn more about my predictions. However, this year’s team has been up and down.

Before the season started, the team acquired Alex Bregman. Though there were a lot of questions about who would play third base, the team decided to use Devers as a DH.

But when Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury, they asked Devers to play first base. And then the problems started.

Andrew Bailey has been stellar in his work with the pitchers. With that being said, I’m not a fan of our bullpen.

In addition, I’m not a fan of Craig Breslow. Although he has been an improvement over Chaim Bloom, he hasn’t been ideal. Breslow’s performance to date has been a mixed bag. Though he missed out on signing some key pieces during the offseason, he has been more aggressive recently, which was evidenced in the Devers trade.

2025 Red Sox Trade Transactions

When Craig Bresslow traded Rafael Devers, there was a lot of disbelief. The team traded Devers to the San Francisco Giants. In return, they received Jordan Hicks, Jaymes Tibbs III, Jose Bello, and Kyle Harrison. Also, the Giants picked up the remainder of his contract of $250 million.

Since trading Devers, the team went on a 10-day winning streak right before the All-Star Break.

Now that the All-Star break is behind them, the team has played inconsistently. Although they have been inconsistent, there is still a lot of optimism for this year’s team.

So, today they acquired left-handed pitcher Steve Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals for infielder Blaze Jordan. Moreover, he is considered a good addition to the team. He has experience as both as a starter and a reliever. Meanwhile, he has kept left-handed batters to a 179 average.

Also, Ken Rosenthal reported that the Red Sox are in the mix for third baseman Eugenio Suarez, to move him to first base. However, Suarez was traded to the Seattle Mariners.

Up to the Minute Trade News

With less than 3 hours to go before the deadline, it has been reported by multiple sources that they are looking to add a starting pitcher and a first baseman before 6:00 p.m.

At 3:50 p.m., it has been reported that the Red Sox are in discussion with the Arizona Diamondbacks for veteran right-hander Merril Kelly.

So, the clock is ticking!

In my opinion, there needed to be more. The team whiffed on a couple of deals. The first baseman they had their eyes on was traded from the Orioles to the Padres.

Not only did they need another starting pitcher and a first baseman, but they also needed more bullpen help.

With the clock winding down, it was announced that the team acquired right-handed pitcher Dustin May from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The players or prospects sent to the Dodgers haven’t been announced yet.

In addition, many teams competing for a playoff spot have become better.

Remainder of the 2025 Season

In summary, were you tuned into the deadline madness?

Meanwhile, I am disappointed. After freeing up the money they owed to Devers, I was hoping they would be much more active in pursuing a top pitcher and a first baseman.

With their lack of moves, I think they will be in a tight race to make the playoffs.

As always, I welcome your comments on the 2025 Red Sox trade transactions. So, are you happy with the moves they made?

Finally, time will tell how they do after the deadline.
