Zohran Mamdani: Future New York Mayor?

Trump's Worst Nightmare?

By Nicholas BishopPublished 2 months ago 3 min read
Mamdani Could Become New York's First Muslim Mayor.

Trump sat talking to 60 Minutes, a news outlet he had sued a while ago. As Trump spoke, his popularity was/is on the wane. With government shutdowns, hundreds of thousands of federal workers are unpaid, and food benefits for millions of people are running out. Trump looks set to go to war with Venezuela and possibly launch military action in Nigeria. This from a president who said he was the anti-war president. So this may also be affecting his poll ratings. On top of this, there is the Democratic New York Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani is an unashamed socialist. Many Democrats have distanced themselves from him, viewing him as too extreme. His radical left views and his pro-Palestine stance have made him controversial, to say the least.

Eric Adams, the outgoing mayor, has endorsed Andrew Cuomo, describing Mamdani as a "liar" and a "snake oil salesman". Andrew Cuomo was the once New York Mayor, but will he be the future one? Cuomo is running as an independent, rejected by his former party, the Republicans, on allegations of sexual misconduct. The other candidate is Curtis Sliwa, known for his continual wearing of a red beret.

Zohran Mamdani is the first Muslim to run for New York Mayor. Mr. Mamdani is Indian-American. Despite many moderate Democrats distancing themselves from him, Mamdani has been endorsed by two figures on what some consider the extreme left, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Despite the Democrats being low in the polls, they have had recent minor successes. Mamdani, at 34, is appealing to younger voters and even people beyond New York. Some see Mamdani's rise as a way back for the Democrats, especially if he becomes mayor.

Mamdani and people like him stand against the MAGA agenda of Trump. Of course, winning one mayoral race does not put the Democrats back in the White House. But the fact that Mamdani is a Democratic candidate for New York Mayor is a dead cert, according to polls and the bookies, to be the mayor has galvanised hope in Democratic ranks, even if it's just those on the left.

So who is Mamdani? Mr. Mamdani, as already stated, is a 34-year-old man at the height of his powers. Very close to his mother and a legal eagle by profession. Zohran is known in rap circles and made a contribution to a Disney movie, which also involved his mother. Mr. Mamdani was elected to the State Assembly in 2020. Mr. Mamdani, unlike his older candidates, is very tech-savvy. He lives on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, etc, connecting to younger voters. Mr. Mamdani knows how those in their 30s and younger operate and has caught their mood correctly. Propelling himself to be the favourite for mayor. That's not to say he will become mayor, Cuomo and Sliwa will have the votes of older voters and anti-Mamdani voters who see him as a threat and anti-American. However, the fact that a non-Christian candidate on the left is popular in Trump's America says a lot. If Mamdani becomes mayor, it will be everything Trump hates. Like having the American equivalent of London Mayor Sadiq Khan on his doorstep. The relationship between Washington and New York will be fraught with conflict. Even some Jewish voters are attracted to Mamdani, surprisingly, when Mamdani is so pro-Palestinian. That's not to say there aren't Jews who are pro-Palestinian.

If Mamdani becomes mayor and delivers for New Yorkers, would he consider a run for president? You can never say never, but folks, I speculate. Zohran Mamdani has not been elected as mayor yet. Many politicians in the past have shone and promised this and that. Only to be found out as charlatans. We will soon find out whether Mamdani becomes mayor and whether he is genuine or the "snake oil" seller that outgoing Mayor Adams described him as.
