controversies
It seems every time one racially-charged incident ends, a gender or religious controversy takes its place; Ruminate on the issues dividing our nation and world.
Subjective Equality
Subjective Equality: Observations on Definitions of Equality Written by Laura Flores - December 14, 2020 Why is it that, over a hundred years after the first wave of Feminism began, the definition of “equality” remains undefined? According to Wiktionary.com, equality has one of three meanings, “The fact of being equal,” “The fact of being equal, of having the same value,” and “The equal treatment of people irrespective of social or cultural differences.” At the same time, checking the main Wikipedia.com search results on “equality” returns over a dozen results, ranging in subject from “Society” to “Arts and Entertainment.” Therefore, equality must mean different things to different people. It seems “The equal treatment of people irrespective of social or cultural differences” is easy to say and difficult to practice.

I wish I could escape my skin
There are days I want to run away and escape the life I have been given. The skin I have been given, the community I have known, and all the problems that come with being black in America. If for one year someone of the opposite race could trade places with me and walk a mile in my shoes what kind of impact would that leave? I long for the days where I can walk on the sidewalk without being bumped, or worship in public without someone calling the police, or walking into a store without being racially profiled. Sometimes it feels like you have been named a terrorist on the FBI's most wanted list. You can't go anywhere or do anything without someone targeting you. Shoot, you can't even put Christmas lights on your property without someone accusing you of breaking and entering, or my personal favorite someone yelling obscene things like "niggers live here or gotta get rid of these niggers" late at night.

In Defence of the Online Bully
One of the most powerful rhetorical devices ever accidentally developed is the epistle. A message ostensibly intended for one audience, but read by another makes the other feel like an eavesdropper, as if they are accessing secret knowledge, not intended for them and therefore more true, more real than the direct approach. A person might lie to you, but we assume they would not lie to that other person or that other group. We are the spy, learning secrets. This approach bypasses our normal social filters and we learn often more than we intended by its use.

A Status Indian
Is it ever a weird time to attempt becoming an emerging creator, we do live in the 21st century now. Sometimes talking with members from my home community makes time feel like an alternate reality, similar to stepping through a vortex into a reality from the world’s most racist eras. So I am going to spill the cooled beans I have here in Canada, from ongoing attempts of genocide perpetrated onto First Nations peoples to unhealed traumas in First Nations peoples; I have met less than a handful of people who are open to bi-racial relationships between First Nations people and Canadians. To put it into more descriptive terms, I’m indigenous, first nations, legally, a Status Indian and I am with a White Canadian male.

Major Asian Cities Are Sinking Under Climate Change
In 2019, Indonesian President Joko Widodo announced the impending move of the country’s administrative capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan on Borneo island. While government officials leave the current capital, about 40 percent of Jakarta is below sea level and some portions of the huge metropolis are sinking at a rate of about eight inches per year.

Gender-based violence and human trafficking amidst the COVID-19 pandemic
Out of sight of law enforcement, human trafficking is surging. For those being trafficked, the pandemic has rendered them more confined and exposed than ever, in close and constant proximity to their abusers. With COVID-19 destabilizing societies and enabling the perpetuation of human trafficking, we can no longer pretend that gender-based violence and trafficking are detached from the greater inequities and vulnerabilities of our societies.

When We Became the News...
So there are a number of things we need to unpack here. The first thing is what the hell I’m talking about, the second thing is the way in which I have seen this happen online with not only no backlash but with many people agreeing even without reading the article at hand. And the last thing is how I feel about the situation and how it creates even more of a division. Now let’s have a look at what I’m talking about.
