Inside Russia's Secret Nuclear Base: A Former Officer Speaks Out

Following the United States and United Kingdom's decision to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles within Russian territory, Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a lowering of the threshold for deploying nuclear weapons. This move has heightened global anxiety over the potential escalation of the ongoing conflict.

For the first time, a former Russian military officer who served at one of the nation’s top-secret nuclear bases has broken his silence. Fleeing Russia after threats of deployment to the front line in Ukraine, he spoke to the BBC at a clandestine location outside of Russia.

Russia’s Nuclear Arsenal on Display

Russia frequently showcases its nuclear capabilities on state television, with veiled threats of atomic strikes aimed at Western nations. One recurring question remains: Would Putin really press the nuclear button?

Anton (not his real name), a former officer in Russia’s elite nuclear forces, might have insights into this pressing concern. He served at a top-secret nuclear base, where troops are tasked with either executing or defending against nuclear strikes.

"There’s a very strict selection process," Anton revealed. "Troops undergo constant checks and lie detector tests. It’s a closed society. No outsiders are allowed. Even if your parents want to visit, you have to submit a request to the FSB security service three months in advance."

To protect Anton’s identity and location, no identifying details have been disclosed. However, he provided documentation confirming his service and role at the nuclear base.

Combat Readiness at the Outbreak of War

Anton described the heightened alert status at the base when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"On the day the war started, we were put on full combat readiness and confined to the base. The weapons were fully prepared and operational to the maximum extent. This state of alert was canceled after two or three weeks," he said.

Despite reports questioning the functionality of Russia’s Soviet-era nuclear arsenal, Anton dismissed such claims as oversimplifications.

"Russia has an enormous arsenal and a vast number of warheads," he explained. "The weapons are fully operational and battle-ready. Maintenance never stops—not even for a minute. There’s a constant patrol of nuclear forces on land, sea, and air."

Fleeing Russia and Risking His Life

After refusing deployment to the front line, Anton fled Russia. Now, he lives in fear of being captured or assassinated by Russian authorities.

"The FSB, the Interior Ministry, and local police are all looking for me," he said. "I realize I could be kidnapped and taken back to Russia by plane."

Despite the personal risks, Anton has chosen to assist other Russian soldiers in escaping the war.

"I understand that the more I help, the higher the chances they could try and kill me," he admitted.

An Increasing Number of Defections

Human rights groups report a growing number of Russian soldiers fleeing the war. The Kremlin is likely growing increasingly uneasy as more individuals like Anton come forward, revealing details about Russia’s military and nuclear operations.

"The Kremlin will do everything to silence voices like Anton's," said a spokesperson for a prominent human rights organization.

What This Means for Global Security

Anton’s revelations shed light on the readiness and capability of Russia’s nuclear forces, challenging Western assumptions about their reliability. As Putin lowers the threshold for nuclear weapon use, global leaders face mounting pressure to address the potential for catastrophic escalation.

In the shadow of nuclear warfare, Anton’s story underscores the human cost of geopolitical brinkmanship and the courage required to oppose it.
