At least seven groups in Democrats oppose Biden choose Ms Flournoy as female defence minister, while many other candidates appear.

Sources know that Michele Flournoy, the top female adviser to two defense ministers under Barack Obama, is a top candidate for the position of Pentagon leadership in Joe Biden's new government.

The decision to select Flournoy as defense minister will be in line with Biden's commitment to a "diverse cabinet". However, this is facing opposition from many officials and factions within the Democratic Party.
