Mark Carney has a rather good CV. Mr. Carney's background in finance is impeccable, and theoretically, if he doesn't know about finance, no one else will. Mr. Carney was the Head of the Bank of Canada. He was also the first non-Briton to be Head of the Bank of England. So, now Mr. Mark Carney is the Prime Minister of Canada after winning the general election.
Mr. Carney is the successor to Justin Trudeau. Trudeau was popular at first, but like all long-serving leaders, his popularity eventually waned. He- strepped down at a time when Donald Trump was threatening Canada with huge tariffs, which came about. Trump has always threatened to make Canada the 51st state of the USA. Just how he was or is going to accomplish this, we wait and see.
Mr. Carney's Liberal Party was expected to lose the general election. The Canadian Trump (I kid you not), Pierre Poilevre, thought he had victory in the bag. He was hoping the unpopular Justin Trudeau would be his opponent. Therefore, he would win and become Canada's next Prime Minister. Had he won, it would have been interesting to see how he would have handled Trump, being Trumplike himself. However, that has not happened, and conversely, it was the looming threat of Trump that undid Pierre Poilevre. And became, ironically, the man who propelled Mark Carney to power.
Canadians were scared, worried, and infuriated that the 'Orange Menace' south of the border would dare to threaten Canada. So, upon hearing Mark Carney's words of defiance, people rallied around him and the Canadian flag. Mark Carney now has the mandate to steer Canada, where Trump has changed everything. From territorial ambitions to huge tariffs, such is the modus operandi and unpredictable behaviour of Donald Trump. Is Mark Carney the man to stand up to Trump and save Canada at a time when Trump wants to annexe it? And when he has imposed huge Tariffs on Canadian goods going into the US.
Certainly, Mark Carney, in his calm manner, seems a man who does get flustered easily. He is a man who does not suffer fools easily, and therefore, the man who would remain stoic against Trump's rantings and meltdowns. Canada and America historically have had an up-and-down relationship. However, in recent times, the Americans and Canadians have enjoyed a good relationship. However, all that changed when Trump 2.0 became 'POTUS'. The moment he issued huge tariffs and threatened to take over Canada, the good relationship between Canada and America ended. Mark Carney said, "We are over the shock of American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons". Mr. Carney also said that Canada will never surrender to the US. The nation will stand up to Trump and will use all its power to fight back.
Whether Mr. Carney is the man cometh the hour remains to be seen. One remembers the 2nd World War, when similarly the world was threatened by a little man with a moustache who had dreams of empire. Yes, I am referring to Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler. Churchill's rousing speeches got the UK through World War II. To eventual victory over the demonic administration in Berlin. I am not saying, unlike others, that Trump is Hitler, nor am I saying exactly that Mark Carney is Winston Churchill. Nor am I saying Trump will go to war with Canada. However, there are parallels. When Churchill said, "To beat us, Hitler knows he must break us in these islands", Mark Carney has said something similar about Canada standing up to Trump.
Trump wanted a Canadian leader he could manipulate, bow to American tariffs, and hand over Canada. So the US could incorporate Canada into the USA and use its resources, as Mr. Carney pointed out. However, there now stands a man in Mark Carney who will resist and have no truck with Trump's tantrums.
