New Writing Crypto Coin
Launched by AVC, will it be a success?
The very little I know and understand about block chains and crypto currencies comes from one and only legendary NYC venture capitalist, Fred Wilson. In blogger sphere, he goes by AVC, currently publishing his blog on Paragraph, a new writing platform for ideas. He has developed a remarkable habit and discipline of blogging daily for over 25 years now (reminds me of our own Vocalite Cody Dakota Wooten in this respect).
Just to give you an idea of how big Wilson is: In mid-1990s, he invested in Yahoo, worked with GeoCities in late 1990s, in 2007 Wilson seeded Twitter. He started investing in tech companies before the dotcom bubble and created his own extremely successful company, USV - Union Square Ventures that redefined New York City as a venture capitalist space competing with Silicon Valley.
Currently, his company seeds and funds many startups in various areas, mostly in high tech and finance. Here is an excellent recent podcast interview with Wilson:
I follow him because every year Wilson writes two capstone reports: one on what has happened in tech and finance during the ending year and the second on what he thinks will happen in these areas in the coming year.
I like going back to some of his older annual posts and see how many of his predictions came true (he does that too) and remarkably his success rate is about 80-90%.
Fred Wilson was one of the early enthusiasts of crypto currencies and personally invested in many of them, both making and losing money. So I was quite surprised that he published this "agnostic" blog post just yesterday, Dec.1, 2025:
That made me think that perhaps Fred intuitively feels some major shifts in crypto that other people have not been able to see yet.
When I was crypto-curious during the pandemic, I invested in DOGE against Fred's advice. He thought that this meme coin, so tightly tied up to Elon Musk's persona, might blow up as a pyramid scheme. I decided to try it anyway, as I was also exploring Robinhood as a digital investment platform.
I invested in DOGE only about $200, right on the high of Musk's pump-&-dump waive, at about 18 cents/coin. It went up to about 57 and then flopped fantastically, staying at 2-5 cents for over three years.
And then Trump got elected and Musk was called in to create DOGE. Its namesake meme coin went up in value again and I sold it at 48 cents/coin, making just enough money to cover three years of inflation. I vouched not to play with anything Musk-related any more and sold my last shares of Tesla then. Of course, DOGE flopped again after Musk left the Trump admin and currently trades at 13-16 cents/coin.
I have decided to write this story because just recently Fred Wilson launched his own crypto coin, $AVC, with the intention of testing if a new business model for writers to make money could be developed on the Paragraph platform. While I only vaguely understand how it will work, the enthusiasm from Fred's readers and supporters is high, as you can see in the comments section on his blog post about it:
Fred dove into it so quickly and so head-on that next day he had to provide additional details:
As a personal disclaimer, even though I am his long-time subscriber, I didn't receive any rewards from him, which seems the case with many other subscribers as well. So I cannot be accused of a personal interest in this publication or promotion of his ideas. I am just genuinely curious if and how this will work, especially given Vocal struggles to be sustainable for both the platform itself and us, its writers.
If any Vocalite out there understands crypto and reads this, please let me know what you think in the comments.
Thanks for reading!

I don't know anything about crypto 😅😅 But whoaaaa, writing daily for 25 years, that's nearing 10k days! Mindblowing! And yes, it reminded me of Cody too hehehe
Just when I think I have a handle on it somethning lets me know I do not. Interesting yet wary of all that is too good to be true
I never believed in crypto but do think it will eventually become the currency of choice in the future. I also don’t understand it enough to give opinions but this is an interesting article since it includes possible angles for writers seeking income. I will be reading about it because I do understand stocks and have a Robinhood account that was doing pretty well until Russia invaded Ukraine. Thank you for sharing this, Lana!
