Romantic Looks from Past Times
Once upon a time, before Wikipedia and before (gasp) even the Internet, my favorite section of the encyclopedia was an article on clothing that featured full color illustrations of fashions through the ages. By now, the fashions current then, at the time of my encyclopedia perusal, are, if not exactly historical, at least vintage. This interest in clothing of the past has stuck with me until today.

Renegade Summer
I've always wanted to be as free as a man but as pretty as a woman. It wasn't enough to achieve this ideologically and politically. There have been many women who sought high achievements and paired their conquests with power suits. No, this is not for me. Someone like me takes in each day as its own adventure, whatever it may bring. If you are a free spirit, then your ride or die is life its very self, or, if you are 17. For those of us who question the very underpinnings of our mundane lives, we rebel with our day-to-day choices- from fashion, to food, to the very way in which we see our work, families, and free time. After finishing the 11th grade, I definitely was looking forward my free time. Especially since, my parents were away with our family friends and decided I was old enough to be alone while the kind old lady downstairs check on me.

One day Catherine de’Medici the queen of France, was having a bad day and decided she didn’t want to see women with “thick” waists at court. She then made an order banishing women from coming to court if they didn’t find a slimming solution. That marked the start of the use of corsets by women in the 19th century. It became wildly popular and became some sort of a uniform and an essential undergarment.

Corsets and the City
The cobblestones as I stroll down the busy London streets are still moist and wet from the rainfall this afternoon. Now at night, the darkened streets are only visible because of the newly-lit gas lamps surrounding every corner—gobbling up the darkness with murky yellow light. The buzz of talking is prominent, as is the hurried click-clack of my boots. As I look down, I behold an emerald-green gown flowing all the way down to the ground, the green so rich and smooth that running my fingers through the gauzy material feels like heaven. Tonight, it seemed all ladies and gentlemen would surely attend the Opera house. There was to be an opening if I recall correctly, impossible to miss.

The Grip of a Corset
I swear that I should have been born in an era where wearing a corset was the standard. I mean, outside of the disease, lice or the fact that there was no running water or modern toilets for most of those eras, the corset is extremely appealing to me. I am a fool for the historical theme shows like The Tutors and Reign. I also love flicks from time periods that have the corset style costumes like Game of Thrones and Bridgerton. The way Angelina Jolie looked in the movie Original Sin… absolutely loved her dresses!

Desperately Seeking the 1980s
I miss the 1980s. No, I'm not talking about the neon jelly shoes, scrunchie-wearing, Jem watching, tween version of the 80s. I'm talking the full-on, Bright Lights Big City, Miami Vice version of the Bonfire of the Vanities 1980s. The I-turned-21-in-1985, 80s. And no, I didn't line up in club bathrooms for lines of coke, but I did have to weave my around my snorting friends to get to a stall, drink in one hand, cigarette in the other. I don't remember how I managed to pull down my pantyhose for a pee.

On such coronavirus pandemic, I’m sure all the women's would have ditched the pants and office wear and have embraced wearing leggings for their stretchy waist. Wouldn’t you be more enjoyable in something flowy and forgiving that drapes around your body in a way that’s elegant and also puzzling? Of course you would. That’s why you need a caftan or the muumuu. You need a caftan like you need air to breathe or tea for refreshment. In other words, a caftan is an elemental need.

Hippie Chic
I was a child in the 60's. When I was young, I couldn't wait to grow up and dress like a hippie ~ I didn't actually know what being one involved, but they made it look so cool! I loved the whole look, from beads and bangles to bangs, from headbands to huaraches. One of my sisters somehow scored a leather jacket with fringes and another one a fringed leather vest, but the closest I ever came were the moccasins I got every year in South Dakota.
