Thrifting isn’t something I do because it saves money, you can find cool and vintage items. I do it because it’s engraved in my DNA. The thrill of shopping in thrift stores is the search and THEN the find. In today’s society, it’s easy to search the internet and immediately find what you’re looking for. When you thrift and you find not only what you were looking for, you just know it was made for you. It was meant to be, if you will. This has happened to me countless times (not to be confused with every time I go about thrift shopping), and this is about the most recent time.

Once upon a time, a little girl walked through a battered metal archway into a world of possibilities. My first visit to a thrift store was a new kind of thrill. A treasure trove awaited me, filled with items even I could afford on my meagre allowance. For the price of a handful of candy, I could snag a fancy purse or choose my own new clothes. I was enthralled by the magic of that secondhand paradise.

Just Like Fishin'
"Let's go "shoppin'", Thomas," said my grandpa, sometime back in the 80s. Grandpa was in his 70s at the time, so he needed a bit of help with the "shoppin'" he had in mind, as I was soon to discover. Next door to his business was a thrift store. Grandpa shopped in the dumpster out back for dress shoes which fit his size 11 EE feet perfectly, 1950s era stainless steel Sunbeam toasters that just needed a new cord and a bit of cleaning to make the most perfectly browned toast you've ever seen and other similar goodies. "One man's trash is another man's treasure, ain't that right, Thomas?" I nodded. "They're getting downright stingy over here, these days, not like they used to be, wha?" I'd never been over here before, so I couldn't judge, but we only found one item in need of a new cord that day. Apparently, though, that was stingy of the thrift store's owners in comparison to former times in the past year or two.

Thrift Store Queen
Above me hangs a square sign in its tarnished white and star-printed glory. Rusted bikes, Fisher-Price kitchen playsets, and dated plastic picnic chairs sit in front of the glass doors on the sidewalk. What will I discover today? I push the heavy metal handle and walk inside, hearing the hustle and bustle of some of the most unique shoppers around. A garbage pit to some, this is my tshatshke goldmine; my penny-pincher Olympics. This is my favorite gem, the Red White and Blue Thrift Store.

The average working American could have done the following with that money. Purchased a decent home and furnished it and bought a really nice vehicle and had money left over to save. This is not an indictment on Markle but using her as an example of the extravagance of those who live lives of privilege.
