One of the best things about having a gay son is the plethora of selfies and photos on social media documenting each mood and outfit, every friend, and numerous nights at the clubs (pre-Covid). I always know what he is doing, who he is with, and what he is wearing. For a mom who lives more than a thousand miles away, that is comforting. When Merlot first moved to the city from college in Boston, his everyday attire just didn't fit the scene. That was obvious in all his posts, even to me. Jeans and sweaters that looked appropriate at Berklee weren't cool enough for a rising star in NYC, but rising stars don't always come from family money. Helping to pay his high rent was difficult enough for me as a single mother on a teacher's pay. There just wasn't extra for new outfits.

I don’t know about anyone else but my sense of fashion has always been inspired by the movies. Upon the moment my eyes saw the bright lights of the projector reach the plain white sheet that uplifted images of glamorous woman and men alike, I knew that my inspiration for style would stem from my favorite icons of the silver screen. Maybe I’m shallow, but I loved watching woman strut around in pearls, diamonds, and silly hats. I loved the bow ties, sweater vests, and slacks that men of the silver screen championed. My fashion sense was inspired by the outfits and pieces I saw in the movies. Quite immediately, I wanted to reincarnate the old fashion trends of every era.

Being born in the year 2000, I have not got a wide experience with big fashion trends as I would have liked. I’ve seen the rise and fall of the chinos in men's fashion (thank God) and white jeans become a rare thing of the past for women. Nearly halfway into the year 2021, I am already seeing corsets becoming a returning trend in women’s fashion. This may not be in the fashion of the history before but they are coming back with a 21st century twist. Although I’m elated the return of the corset is among us, I’m still waiting patiently for the day Audrey Hepburn style dresses make their return.

It was 1988, and MTV was all the rage. Music videos gave us a whole other perspective of what looking cool meant. There was Cindy Lauper, with her spiked, orange hair with one side shaved and long skirts with petticoats. Joan Jett, with all black leather and a mean attitude. But more than anything, I wanted to look like Madonna. Her short bob curls tied up with bandanas were the most awesomest-awesome thing I had ever seen. I loved her hundreds of bracelets, the infinity necklaces that made crucifixes look cool, and above all, the way she would wear layers and layers of clothes and still look sexy.
