As I grew up I didn’t want many toys. This was very lucky. Instead my Dad built my sister and I, a making bench. One day he came in and put a sewing machine down on the bench. He said, “Here you go Em. This little lever goes up and down, and you put the fabric in here. Then put your foot on the pedal, don’t go too fast and don’t, whatever you do, get your fingers caught” I may have been about ten years old. For the last 40 years I have been so busy with sewing that I haven’t even had time to do a proper sewing course. From the start, this was my tool.

Taking Fashion Back
Cutting ties with Fast Fashion I have deliberately not shopped fast fashion for more than a year now. The recent global pandemic helped with that, but I also mean no online shopping at all. In fact, in that regard, it has been longer. Because my last Boohoo purchase was 3 years ago, and my last Asos was 4. I remember buying from Shein at some point before it became a huge thing, but upon logging in I realised that was in 2014! Time is weird. And so were my fashion decisions.

It was around this time five years ago I purchased my first sewing machine; little did I know what I was getting into. Unknowingly, I purchased a highly revered ‘Brother’ sewing machine. Using my local “buy, sell & trade” I found this listing for a gorgeous seafoam & aqua vintage sewing machine. What’s funny about the whole thing is that I hadn’t the slightest clue how to sew, it was the colors of it that sold the purchase.
