If you’re planning to visit Qatar, a shopping trip to Doha is a must. It’s one of the most popular shopping destinations in the country. With shopping malls as well as traditional souqs, the city promises a wonderful shopping experience. Want to know more? Then read this guide on finding authentic items, just like a local would.

Gold Souq

Gold might not be something you usually shop for on your regular shopping spree, but when it comes to shopping in Doha, the Gold Souq is one of the spots to visit.

You could treat yourself to something nice, buy something shiny for a friend, or maybe just have a look around. Whatever it is, the Gold Souq is a great place to find authentic Qatari items.

The market sells precious gems, yellow gold, and more affordable options like white gold, silver, and platinum accessories. Keep in mind that during local holidays, the market is packed.

The Gold Souq is open Saturday to Thursday from 9 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 10 pm, and Friday from 4 pm to 10 pm.

Souq Waqif

Another place where you can find authentic Qatari items is the Souq Waqif. This historic marketplace has many stalls selling local handicrafts, spices, jewellery, and textiles. It happens to be one of the oldest markets in Qatar. In fact, it was where Bedouins came to trade their camels and other goods in the olden days.

The heat can be a bit strong, so consider visiting early in the morning or late in the evening. It’s only a short hop from Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels, considered one of the best hotels in Doha.

Doha Festival City

A large shopping centre with hundreds of stalls selling anything and everything, Doha Festival City is another must-visit for those looking for unique finds. While there are hundreds of shops, it’s the entertainment that attracts crowds.

Inside the park is a theme park called Angry Birds Park. It features a trampoline, bumper cars, ziplines, go-kart tracks, and various rides such as Raft Battle and Angry Coaster.

If you’ve been battered by the desert heat, you’ll find a welcoming respite in Snow Dune, an indoor snow park with slides and snow-capped hills.

Central Vegetable Market

Even if you don’t want to buy fresh veggies, the Central Vegetable Market is a must-visit. A few years ago, they decided to move it from the old open-air location to a more modern one. Despite the location change, it remains busy with locals.

Those who love to cook visit the market to get great deals on veggies and meat. You can buy them in bulk and have them delivered to your vehicle. Feel free to talk to vendors more about the local veggies. You can also request to sample the fruits before buying them. There’s a small retail section that sells everything in small quantities.

Souq Al Dira

To buy high-quality fabrics like silk, cashmere, pashminas, and lace, head over to Souq Al Dira. If you’re a fashionista, you’ll love it here! Remember that the prices aren’t fixed, so go ahead and haggle for the best price. If you see something you like but the price is too high, haggle for a lower price, but if it doesn’t work, you’re sure to find the same thing in a few other stores.

The souq is loved by tailors. They go there to buy premium fabrics to make perfectly fitted jackets, dresses, and pants. It’s also a popular spot for locals to get Abayas custom-made.

Corniche Fish Market

Want to know where all the delicious seafood dishes you’ve been savouring come from? Visit the Corniche Fish Market. It sits by the promenade and is usually busy in the morning when the local fishermen bring in the daily catch.

Take a walk down the jetty to see a variety of fish on display. You can buy fish or just enjoy the busy atmosphere. Hang around enjoying the soothing breeze and watching fishermen get their boats ready for the next day.

Doha sounds like a shopper's paradise! The Gold Souq seems like a great place to splurge on some shiny stuff. I wonder if the prices are negotiable like in other markets. Souq Waqif also sounds interesting with its local handicrafts. And Doha Festival City with its entertainment options is a bonus. Have you been to any of these places? What was your favorite thing to buy or do there?
