Among so many soldiers, he had expected songs and laughter and the noise of sportive fighting to come in through the window, but the night had been so quiet. Nothing broke his solitude in the little bedroom, and he was alone with his thoughts. His jailers had left paper, quill, ink, and plenty of candles; before dawn, the letter-writing was done. He had little to say, finally, and few loved ones to write anyway. The army had been his life, his passion.

The Duel
Even in the very early hours of the morning, the heat was oppressive. My windows and curtains were drawn against the night air and the fevers it brought. A candle lit my writing desk and I looked down at the finished letter there. There were several others, finished and sealed in a stack, but this last one had hurt the most to write. Several years before, I had cause to write a similar letter, but it never seemed to get easier. My dear Theodosia, the only thing it would pain me to leave behind, and my greatest pride. My head ached as I sanded the letter, folded and sealed it. My hands went calmly through the familiar motions, long-fingered and deft. I checked my watch, holding the face near the candle to see the gold hands. The portraits of Theo and her mother regarded each other on its face. The faith that had so consoled my wife in her last painful months did nothing for me despite all her wishes. I reached out for faith and found empty resignation. Three hours until dawn.

Dead Letter Office
Upstairs in the old house, Emily had just met ghost. “I’ve been talking to a man,” she announced casually as she cradled her cup of bedtime cocoa. Her father looked up from his paper at the little girl, snuggly in her flannel pajamas - skin rosy from her bath. She sat with her teddy bear on the couch, her legs tucked up under her. He knew she wasn’t one for make-believe friends or having imaginary conversations.

The Price of Freedom
Do we ever contemplate our freedom? Owning your own home, keeping a job, or nurturing a family, are some of the everyday blessings that many of us live in. Born in our 21st-century western world, we live in the fruits paid by generations before us. Freedom is never free. Real freedom always comes with a cost. There is a price to be paid. In 2019, the Free World came to a pause to remember and commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France. The events of June 6th, 1944 are arguably one of the most influential moments in modern history. Many people from various nations in the free world fought against the Nazi War Machine. They fought to liberate the world from tyranny, from evil, and from destruction. They gave up their lives to protect the many freedoms that you and I live and express today.

As we looked back on this infamous day, a day of dread, and a day of terror, we must be united against all forms of terror in the world. Wherever there is terror, that should be the target of America and its allies to ending that threat. As a superpower, we must recognize our strength and influence. There is no country like America and America was forged to lead the world. Our founders wanted us to show the world how to govern and to mend our destiny with nations and peoples who need us and respect us. We can no longer be blinded to our influences and we must be careful about who we allied ourselves to. With our alliances, we can free people and with our alliance, we can bound people.

Heading Back To School? Here's Some History Help...
I remember going back to school one year, and I loved history. It was my favourite subject and I had the best teacher. I was always top of the class and never got anything below an A. BUT, then we started doing the Cold War and Stalin and my brain had a bit of a meldown. Of course, I eventually got my head around it all and I was fine, but I looked all over the internet to help me learn extra outside of class. So, I thought I'd share a mini exam question answer that I wrote and got the teacher to check.
