Breakup Nonet Challenge Winners
An inside look into the Vocal Curation Team's favorite poems from the Breakup Nonet Challenge

Well, we all know it’s true. Breakups are horrible — but hey, at least you get to make art, right? So thanks to all of you for either mining or imagining your romantic dismay for our Breakup Nonet challenge.
Our winner is Gabriel Huizenga with Airport Love and its metaphor of flight — there’s nothing like a liminal space to expand the heart. In second place is Gina C’s Separate Stars & Worlds: we loved those eyes of fireflies, and all the rest.
And congratulations too to all of our 25 runners-up. We added a runner-up for each day we were late to share this fantastic news. We were so impressed with the submissions and so glad this challenge motivated so many of you to enter. Cathy Holmes’ Bitter Coffee left a nice taste in our mouths; Poppy’s Disassembled acknowledged pain while giving hope; Alexandria Stanwyck’s image of a kite in Letting Go was poignant.
We’re appreciative of your wisdom here at Vocal. Here’s to the healing power of words.

Congratulations to Gabriel Huizenga for winning the Breakup Nonet Challenge with 'Airport Love'—what a brilliant metaphor for the emotional turbulence of breakups! Also, hats off to Gina C for 'Separate Stars & Worlds,' which beautifully captured the fleeting, yet powerful imagery of fireflies. It's inspiring to see such creativity and depth in each submission.
