500 Word Shockwave Challenge Winners
A behind-the-scenes glimpse at the Vocal Curation Team’s top picks from 500 Word Shockwave.

A great twist doesn’t just surprise you—it makes you see the whole story differently.
For this challenge, we asked you to write exactly 500 words of flash fiction that built to a twist big enough to flip everything upside down. The goal wasn’t just to shock, but to make that final moment land in a way that stuck with the reader.
And you pulled it off—again and again.
These stories were tight, creative, and full of smart misdirection. Some were funny, others unsettling, and a few hit with emotional weight that lingered long after the last sentence. What they all had in common? They made us do a double-take—and that’s no small thing in 500 words.
🏆 $500 Grand Prize Winner: Route 96 by Lamar Wiggins
Lamar Wiggins' story is a masterclass in gradual tension-building and the art of the twist. The dialogue effectively paints a vivid scene while dropping subtle hints about a darker truth, and the innocent facade of the conversation with Jimmy builds to a spine-tingling climax. The story skillfully manipulates expectations and delivers an emotional punch with a shocking revelation, making the final lines both haunting and poignant. This creative risk pays off beautifully, leaving a lasting impression.
🥈 $200 Second Place: How To Build Utopia by Shaun Walters
Shaun Walters' 'How To Build Utopia' captivates with its vivid imagery and a chilling twist that redefines the protagonist's mission. The story builds a hopeful vision of peace only to subvert it with Khaira's shocking intent, making her both creator and destroyer. The tension mounts with every word, as Shaun skillfully layers the narrative until the devastating climax, leaving the reader both stunned and reflective on the cost of utopia.

The format keeps things punchy, and the payoff lands with just the right amount of shock.
The Genesis Clone by Rebecca Patton
Rebecca Patton's story, 'The Genesis Clone,' cleverly spins a tale of ethical dilemmas and identity crisis, packed with emotional tension. Eva's journey from confusion to self-awareness is both heart-wrenching and exhilarating, especially when her escape and Old Jack's revelation flip the narrative, showing a glimmer of humanity where it was least expected.
Primal Appetite by Deanna Cassidy
Deanna Cassidy's take on the prompt is a sensory journey through the jungle, leading to a surprising and satisfying twist. The narrative cleverly uses the environment to build an immersive setting, preparing us for the revelation of the protagonist as an electric eel. The story explores primal instincts, from hunting to mating, with a seamless flow that culminates in a unique, electrifying finale.
The Meeting Could’ve Been An Email by E.K. Daniels
E.K. Daniels' story is a sharp, satirical take on corporate life that’s both funny and unsettling. With a playful tone and pitch-perfect office jargon, it builds to a darkly clever payoff that leaves a lasting impression.
Predatory by D.K. Shepard
D.K. Shepard's story delivers a thrilling narrative with a twist that redefines the protagonist's role, transitioning from what appears to be a sinister predator to a protective agent. Suze Kay's 'Together' crafts a haunting narrative that unfolds with a meticulous build-up of emotion and setting. The protagonist's reflection on lost dreams and love subtly guides the reader towards an ending that shocks with its intensity. The steady, nostalgic pacing juxtaposed with the dark, unexpected finale makes for a compelling twist that lingers long after the last word.
The Last Wish by Alison McBain
Alison McBain's story cleverly twists the classic wish trope into a poignant reflection on love and happiness. The emotional depth is masterfully packed into just 500 words, as Melanie's desires for wealth and a long life are ultimately hollow without genuine connection. The bittersweet ending delivers a final, thought-provoking punch that lingers long after the last word.
No Witnesses by Pitt Griffin
Pitt Griffin's story cleverly flips expectations with a darkly humorous twist. The tension builds with the repeated mantra of 'no witnesses,' lulling the reader into anticipating a grim ending. The surprise reveal is a delightful curveball that not only undercuts the sinister mood but also highlights the irony of the protagonist's plot. The story succeeds in being both suspenseful and unexpectedly lighthearted, making it a memorable and entertaining entry.
Diplomas Flambé by Marie Wilson
Marie Wilson's story deftly explores the complex relationship between a daughter and her estranged father, weaving a tapestry of emotions from bitterness to reluctant reconciliation. The poignant finale is both cathartic and beautifully bittersweet, offering a hopeful twist that resonates with emotional depth.
Beneath the Surface by Clyde E. Dawkins
