What did ancient philosophers think of dreams?
There are many different interpretations of dreams throughout history. Ancient philosophers had their own thoughts on the matter.
For example, Socrates believed that dreams were a way for the subconscious to communicate with the conscious. He thought that they were prophecies, and could be used to help people make decisions.
Plato also believed that dreams were a way for the subconscious to communicate with the conscious. However, he thought that they were more like memories, and could be used to help people understand their own thoughts and feelings.Ancient philosophers had a variety of thoughts about dreams. For the most part, they believed that dreams were sent by the gods, and could be interpreted to provide insights about the future, or to reveal things about the dreamer’s character and innermost desires. Some philosophers, like Aristotle, believed that dreams were simply the result of memories or thoughts that had been active during the day.
The ancient philosophers were greatly interested in dreams and their meanings. Dreams were seen as a way for the gods to communicate with humans, and they were thought to be able to reveal the future. Many philosophers believed that dreams were sent by the gods in order to warn humans about dangers or to give them advice.
According to ancient beliefs, dreams were messages from the gods. Ancient Egyptian and Sumerian historical records contain records of these beliefs. It is also included in heredot’s historical narratives and the expressions of some poets.
So, what did these dreams say, according to the common belief? According to this old belief we were talking about, they were telling the future and had the power to heal. There were even sacred temples built for it. One of the most important was the dream temples of Asklepios. Diseases are being treated at the temple on the island of Kos, where people go to recover through sleep and dreams. In fact, these temples were called hospitals at the time.
Asklepios was, according to some researchers, a poet, a philosopher to others, a man who healed diseases, and even, to others, “the most humane of the gods.” Dream healing was considered one of the most effective therapies used by former doctors to treat diseases.
Arnold Mindell explains that during therapy, the priest or doctor makes healing taking into account the message from the gods, believing that the body is healed in the dream during sleep, reflecting the diseases within the dream. With our current knowledge and worldview, this message comes from the body and is called body intelligence.
For the first time, Aristotle developed thoughts about modern dream analyses from Greek history and did not accept the divine source of dreams. Aristotle believed that dreams could have content such as informing the future, but that this was mostly a coincidence.
In the light of all this, it is true that we have an inner potential, that in our past we cannot explain logically, but that there are very valuable dreams, that leaders have important dreams of prophecy. We need to remember that we are spiritual beings other than what we perceive with our five senses. In this way, I believe it will be possible to be balanced.
