Everyone thinks I’m an asshole. Either they think I actually didn’t care about my son, or they think I’m using him in some dark way to fuck with people. What no one considers is that there is no good way to deal with losing your child. There’s only mania, fits of spitting rage and hysterical bouts of laughter and tears. Bloody, ripped jeans where your knees hit the asphalt in the grocery store parking lot. Back breaking fatigue that blurs your vision after day three of forgetting to eat. A dented fender where you reversed into the pylon in your apartment complex parking lot, not once, but twice!

The turmoil
I can hear the pitter patter of the rain falling against the asphalt, making its presence known. The dimly lit street reflecting its shine from the already made puddles. I try to sit up and feel a throbbing in my head “ow” I mutter to no one but the barn owl perched on the street light. I smell iron and I grab at my head; blood. Well I must have got into some trouble last night. I glance at my phone; 8 missed calls and 2 unread texts “great” I sigh. It’s of course my mother checking in on me. Since the passing of my sister I’ve been keeping to myself, I of course understand she lost a daughter but I lost my best friend. I was the last person she contacted before… well before the accident, I blame myself.

It occurred to me the other day as I pulled back the sheets on my bed that I never smell like chocolate. I had a flashback to the days of my youth when I smelled like a distillery the day after drinking. There were moments in hot yoga rooms in those days when I was worried the person in triangle pose next to me might get pulled over for a DUI on her way home. She would be unable to explain to the police officer why she was blowing above a .08 on a Sunday afternoon, now late to make Sunday dinner for her two happy children and her adoring husband, what a bummer.
