In my career I have had many people ask me what Hypnotherapy is and how it works. I have also had people express fear that hypnosis is “mind control”. I am here to explain what it is and debunk the “mind control” theory.
Hypnosis is NOT mind control
We have all heard of stage hypnosis. The kind that is performed on stage and the hypnotist makes people act strange or bark like dog for example. Here is the thing, that style of hypnosis is for entertainment purposes only. Keep in mind those people volunteered to get up there . They know that they are going to be doing stuff that will be entertaining for the audience. The hypnotist will run tests to see if they are easily hypnotized. Some people are not and they do not get to be part of the show. Again! everyone there has volunteered to be up there. So when the hypnotist asks them to bark like dog they will. If they are asked to perform an act that is not in their core value system or something they wouldn't normally do they wont do it. It is that simple.
In hypnosis you are in full control! Ill repeat that full control. You are not sleeping, you are deeply relaxed. You are completely aware of everything around you and you will not do anything that is not aligned with who you are.
Hypnosis is in fact a natural state. You experience it through out the day while you walk, meditate, listen to music and so on.
The therapist helps guide you into hypnosis to put you into relaxation. Depending on what you've discussed with the therapist. The hypnotherapist will only work on the areas you agreed on. Whether that be depression, weight management, anxiety, relationships and so forth.
Your mind has four parts. The conscious, the critical faculty, the sub conscious mind, and the primitive mind. The conscious mind is what you use for critical thinking, and does one thing at a time. The critical faculty, its kind of like a filter and it works between the conscious and subconscious mind. Its the gatekeep of what is allowed into your subconscious. It gets renewed when you get proper REM sleep, however; if you don't things get backed up in the filter and this can cause anxiety and depression. It is one reason why it is SO important to get that 8 hours of beauty sleep. So when you want to communicate a message of change between the conscious and subconscious that filter needs to take a mini break for your subconscious to absorb the message. Your subconscious mind is responsible for many things including memory from conception, belief systems, emotions, creativity, and more. It does over 750,000 things at once. Pretty powerful, right? The goal is to get the filter to step aside, take a nap, distract it so the therapist can get to the subconscious mind and send the message to it to make a lasting change. Here is where is your belief systems can change and any deep rooted patterns that need a shift.
So now that I have your attention and you want to give it a go or you've got more questions look up one of your friendly hypnotherapists today. Its relaxing and has excellent results.
