Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help with depression
If you suffer from depression, here are some ways to relieve your symptoms
In a world where depression could easily obscure the light of hope in one’s mind, the field of psychology stands as a solution for understanding and relief. Storms of emotions often rage within the minds and hearts of those who struggle with depression. Psychologists are often seen as doctors that one goes to that has a mental disorder. This couldn’t be further from the truth. I urge you. If you are suffering from depression, there are measures you can take to feel much better. You can feel like yourself again. Psychologists or even books on psychology, for those who are not “into” going to a professional, can offer much more than just glimmers of hope and relief for those lost in the depths of depression.
Among the vast psychological approaches to tackle depression, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) emerged as a leading pathway for relief for many suffering from depression and anxiety. This therapy illuminated the understanding that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors were interconnected, and by challenging and reshaping negative thought patterns, individuals could rekindle their inner light and happiness. With this method, many have discovered that their inner voice plays a crucial role in determining their emotional state. With the guidance of one’s therapist, one can learn to retrain their thoughts, uncovering the resilience of the happiness of their mind.
In the world of psychological solutions, medication also shines brightly. For some, the chemical imbalances within their brains are like a heavy weight on their shoulders. This can cause their minds to rage out of control. Antidepressant medications act as a stabilizing substance. As the storm clouds begin to clear, when taking medication under the direction of a doctor, one can gain strength to engage in therapy and adopt healthier lifestyle habits.
For example, one such method of CBT is called “cognitive restructuring”. In this method one aims to replace negative or ANT’s, (automatic negative thoughts), with more realistic thoughts or more positive thoughts to reduce anxiety and experience relief from depression.
Another method is called “behavioral activation”. This addresses behaviors that reinforce psychological distresses or anxieties. Patients engage in behaviors, rather, that bring them a sense of accomplishment or happiness. Such as painting or talking with a loved one or even horseback riding. Often animals can provide love and companionship to those who are lonely or depressed.
One method less often used is called exposure therapy. In this method one slowly, over time, submits themselves to the very thing that causes them anxiety or any other mental distress, a little at a time. All the while reinforcing their thoughts with positive thoughts and feelings. Any method that the patient may choose this to be done, whether it be with a counselor or on their own or even with a friend.
Often a psychologist will give their patient homework, this is another method by which a person can practice their positive thoughts or well thinking for real world application.
Dialectical behavioral therapy, (DBT), is another method of CBT used to treat depression and anxiety. By which a therapist engages is talking with the patient and practicing emotion regulation.
But CBT is not the sole resolution in the field of psychology. The Humanistic approach sheds light on and emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance and personal growth. The humanistic method in psychology emphasizes the different qualities and personal experience of an individual and one’s innate potential for personal growth. One who is burdened by the weight of social expectations, can go on a journey of self-discovery with the guidance of humanistic therapy. One can learn to embrace one’s true self, casting aside the masks we commonly wear for years on end. One’s heart no longer needs to be imprisoned by the shackles of conformity to society.
One concept of humanistic therapy is called “self-actualization”. In this method one realizes the innate drive that each person has within to fulfill their full potential. It involves the pursuit of meaningful goals and personal growth.
Another method of humanistic therapy is “free will and choice”. Humanistic therapy places an emphasis on free will and personal choice. Also, there is an emphasis on “positive regard” and the emphasis on one’s need for acceptance from others.
The field of psychology stands as a testament to the power of the human mind to relieve even the darkest areas of the mind. Through cognitive-behavioral therapy, humanistic approaches, medication, and a host of other strategies, one can discover that solutions to depression are not just distant, far off, hard to reach goals. But, rather, attainable feelings guiding them back to themselves. In support, therapists, counselors, and medical professionals harmonize these methods to guide those in need toward better days. The light of psychology will continue to shine, offering pathways to healing and renewal.
