My Name is Kate . Top Story - April 2021.
I am a glass of Merlot. And what they never tell you about us is that we go on dates, too. The suspense begins in the bottle. We never know which molecule of us will be chosen to go on the date, Poured out in a hurried storm that resembles an avalanche of jewels, or a rope of silk untwisting before your eyes. You might say that, in the bottle, we belong to a collective consciousness, a single unified awareness, and we don’t really know Ourselves or who We are UNTIL we are poured out, until we take the shape of the glass — until we soak up the shimmer of the décor, the swirl of the waitstaff and the roar of a restaurant rush, and become an I, a Me, a Self.

Tulips and Wine
“The Jansen family estate in Sonoma was exquisite. Entering the foyer and looking left, the dining room featured high ceilings, a large mahogany table, and one of the most famous pieces of art in the world. The Dutch artist De Jong’s piece, entitled Tulip Mania, was an abstract piece of art. The planks were eight feet tall and ten feet wide when put together. The colorful oil paints were supposed to represent tulips in full bloom. Most importantly at the time, the planks fit perfectly on the dining room wall. The Jansen family had entered the wine business at the perfect time and had made handsome profits.

For The Love Of Wine
"This I would pair a roasted haunch of venison covered in juniper berries, shallots, rosemary, and a bit of salt," I stated as I drank the Estate Syrah I had just been poured. The sommelier, by now completely familiar with my culinary musings when tasting their wines, invited me to tell her what I would accompany the meat with. As we sat, teasing our taste buds with the imaginary feast, a dashing man came in and sat down next to me and ordered a full tasting. I waited as his first glass was poured before musing further about the menu. "Jen, I think that this wine has such complexity that I would want to pair it with some roasted winter veg like parsnips, carrots, fennel bulb, and carrots and seasoned with a little pink Himalayan salt and herbs. Of course, there would need to be a hearty potato of some sort, but I am thinking something simple so as not to distract from the wine... perhaps some roasted potatoes with a hint of garlic and salt?"

"You Had Me at Merlot"
Six o’clock. 6:00 p.m. 1800 hours. Ben looked down at his phone; message received two hours ago, “See you soon! Xo-xo.” A text to which, he replied, “Can’t wait!” But Ashleigh was nowhere in sight. They had met online, and after talking for two weeks, they were FINALLY meeting in person. They agreed upon La Vite for Happy Hour. La Vite was the new wine bar in town, and they were both looking forward to enjoying a fine glass of medium-bodied red wine.

First Date Flight
The personal jet sat on the runway in New Castle, Delaware. Twenty-four year-old Wilmington hedge fund manager Lenden Sill fumed. Lawyer Karita Virtanen sat across from him while his oak-colored skin soaked up the sun. Her own skin glowed white in the early morning rays. They fussed.

The Wine Machine
“But this isn’t Breaking Bad,” Dr. Waddell Lin said. “And I’m not Jesse,” Jillian Garnett said. Lin laughed. “Hand me those two beakers over there, please. If you want to earn your doctorate, you’re going to have to first complete this formula for our first date,” the doctor said. “Take that ethanol and water.”

The Judgement of Paris
Wine made anywhere other than Europe (particularly France) had always had a stigma attached to it, especially in the early 20th century. These days, though, you can find great wine at almost every price point from anywhere in the world. So, what changed?

Speak
It was dark the first time they met. A sky so gray, it was almost violet, scrubbing willpower and memory from the air. But Elena was fierce as always. She felt the oncoming storm as a challenge. As she blustered out of the office that day on Davis Street, smoky black hair whipped effortlessly in a French twist behind her, she was fuming. Her client, a sixteen year old who had been in the foster care system for years, was being told that her new school district didn't have any aides that could sign for her in class. She could still feel her fingers buzzing from talking and signing angrily in tandem at the school district attorney. Her client sat next to her, sighing gently every few minutes. Why did some people have so much, and some so little?

I've Been Matched!
Can you believe it? A dating site that picks a love match for you by simply taking a quiz as to your taste in wine? The way they say it works is the pairing supposes you to have a certain "taste" that is similar to your favorite wine with those qualities or characteristics in those of your profile picks and vice versa. They (the other participants) have also been matched to you using the same quiz. I suppose it's like a perfect pairing, right? Sort of like which wines go with which particular cheese. In this case, the men are the wines and the women are the cheese. In any case, it sounded like it would be fun. So, I did it!
