The past month of June was the, every time more visualized, Pride Month. The Pride Month is an important date for thousands of people, who are learning to accept themselves in an heteronormative world; learning about their differences and growing through them; being proud of who they are.

Queer theory is close to my heart. I’ve spent hours pouring over the staples (serious and absurd) on Queer Futurity: from Cruising Utopia to Females to “The SCUM Manifesto”. I’ve submerged myself in the works of Audre Lorde, Gloria Anzaldua, Susan Stryker, Akwaeke Emezi, Audrienne Rich, David Wojnarowicz, Angela Davis, Jos Charles, Robert Mapplethorpe, James Baldwin, Judith butler, Nella Larson, and Michel Foucault (although admittedly, The History of Sexuality will always be something of an obnoxious enigma to me).

Excommunicated at 14
When I was fourteen I was caught in the arms and bed of a sexy little boy just three years my junior. Problem is I was also a boy and this was the 1970's. I mention this story in my book Silent Cries, A Memoir. Why do I mention this here? I am starting to advocate more for gay youth as I know the first hand challenges they face. What was it like to be excommunicated by the Pastor and Youth Pastor? It was very difficult as a teenager to understand what was going on and why. The family attended an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church with strict adherence to the bible. Being gay wasn't allowed nor would they discuss it with you.

Living in the closet
Gay rights has come a long way since I was a child during the 1960's and 1970's. So why when it is so widely accepted would anyone stay in the closet in 2021. Security is the biggest reason. If you are caught in a homosexual act in a Muslim country, you are either beheaded or thrown from the highest building in the city.
