Yellow Romper

What's Your Name? I Bet It's Something Beautiful

The music pounds in my chest,

And I’m high – but I’m happy

I’m so happy

And then – I see you

Your skin glows underneath the disco lights -

I look at the way your hair curls effortlessly at your waist

So delicate –

Like a doll I have at home,

It was as if I had dressed you myself

Your romper – it’s so cute

The mustard yellow highlights the blue butterflies

That seem to dance along with you

So freakin gorgeous –

And then I see him.

Your boyfriend

He looks like a douchebag,

BUT – only for a second

Because beneath his eyes is a soft sort of love

And I can see how much he adores you

Like the way my boyfriend looks at me,

I can see the love in his eyes

And his kind smile –

he has a sort of smile I could picture inside of a frame

I want to capture both of you in the frames of my life

You two are the perfect couple friends for me and my boyfriend

I know this, because I can feel it in your eyes

I can see it in his smile

I can imagine the two of you holding my future baby

And smiling at my phone as I take a picture…

What are your names?

I bet it’s something beautiful.

I bet it is as perfect for you as you two are for me and mine

I want you to notice me

I want you both to watch me looking at you

Here you are –

The couple that will be the yin to our yang

We will have a group chat that we all hate but love

We will have vacations where we will be one with the waves and the music and the birds

But most importantly,

With each other

We’ll all pay for everything for each other

But owe one another nothing in return

And I know this –

Because 25 minutes ago I did not believe in love at first sight

Until I saw you…

And him

And I saw you both for who you are

I don’t even know your names yet....

The last couple I had these feelings about

Are no longer together

No, they didn’t break up

He killed himself.

We went to the funeral –

And never before had I ever been in a place where I knew no one

and yet could feel everyone

I could feel the pain, soaking up like a sponge

Most of us have yet to reach the age of 30,

And there we were, burying a friend

Gone was my friend

Gone were my couple friends

Gone was a man I hardly knew, but whom I wanted my kids to call ‘Uncle Duncan’

Or Unkie Ducky –

He would’ve loved it.

There is hardly a day that goes by where I don’t think about him and the future I wanted with him and his girlfriend

So…whoever you two are

The couple who caught my attention and consumed my every waking thought

All I want, is for you to be there at my wedding

I want late night dinners and game nights

I want to hold your kids and be hung up on your walls

I love you…

At least, I’m sure I do

And I wish you were here,

Grooving with me

Let’s start making our first memories together.

Because you two will become our new best friends

Or…

Maybe you’re just strangers I’m projecting my love onto

But, either way

I LOVE your romper

And if you aren’t the loves of our lives,

I at least have to know –

Where did you get it?

Because it looks super cute on you.
