Winter River

Observation

By Harper LewisPublished 11 days ago Updated 11 days ago 1 min read
South Fork River

Thin sheets of ice on the Catawba on my morning drive, something I’ve never seen.

By afternoon, the ice melts, but the cold water flows so slowly it seems motionless, and the surface looks like the sky.

Hawks ride thermals, browsing for prey, a log falls in a canal, earthworms wriggle and writhe in the dirt, and gators come farther north. The forest doesn’t really sleep.

Beautifully observed. Those quiet details make the scene feel alive and timeless.

What a wonderfully full little vignette

  • Love your words, and the photo reminds me of some I took on the river Ness

The surface looks like the sky is such a simple, perfect image. It really makes me pause and imagine the moment.
