Winter Is On The Way

Gone are the haybales, and under the fog, it is sunny today

By Denise E LindquistPublished 3 months ago β€’ Updated 3 months ago β€’ 1 min read

There is frost on the pumpkins or so they say

There is a chill in the air on my walk this Friday

It is damp and I need to be careful not to fall

I shiver as I head out the door

and return for a coat afterall

I had second thoughts but I abhor

not dressing properly for the cold

I may get cold but not when I am old

Bundling up is what I do

when I can tell I need a coat and I got the clue

As soon as I walked out that door, I walked back in

shivering. The fog was thick in places, beautiful but spin

around I did to dress appropriately, and cheers

came out of my mouth as I exclaimed and tears

rolled down my eyes, so the whole world hears

Sunrise and frost - Author's photo on 10-23-25

It is here, winter is just around the corner now

No bird sounds answer me, because it will be time to plow

Our first snow was yesterday as we drove to town

It is getting to be more and more brown

Some of the leaves are still up and continue turning

Soon they will be on the ground or in a pile burning

Everyone is remembering the Halloween blizzard

Early snow around here brings the talk that is heard

of an early winter. So much beauty to see in our changing

of seasons. The smells and the sounds, and the birds flying

south and the chickadees are still at the feeders but there

are fewer. Filling the feeders daily does not now happen here.

That is a sign that life around here is in the process of change

on the range.

Author's note: The snow fence is up, the motorcycles are put away, the snowmobile is where the motorcycles went, the mowers are all cleaned up and stored until the grass is growing again, while the chains are on what is used for a plow. The machines that need the winter medicine are all taken care of. We are all set for another winter.

I love the imagery! The way you described everything is just so beautiful it lulled me into coziness, but the same time I could feel the winter's chill in my bones.

What a lovely visualisation, Denise, thank you. The image you took is lovely. I can almost hear the crunch underfoot when you walk on the frayed grass. Lovely.

GREAT POEM... I'll never think of winter again the way I do now. Living in Florida for the past 22 years, I'd forgotten those close winters from the north. Thank you for such a beautiful memory.
