Why Do You

Do What You Bitch About

Some people, all they know how to do is complain because of the lack of interaction.

Instead, they act like others should read what they spent thirty minutes spinning out.

Constantly complaining because their reads or comments are down.

Only each one of them seems to forget all here for the same thing.

Probably, the saddest truth is that most of the others are even better writers than they are, too.

Honestly, the greediness and lack of reciprocity makes me sick of it all.

And since the leaderboard revamp, the complaining and lack of interaction have been fighting for dominance.

Now is the time for a change, before people start losing subscriptions over no communication.

Tired of seeing the lack of respectful consideration.

Slow down and appreciate the other writers on the site.

Our dear Vocal Mom Judey, the Queen of Vocal, gives some valid reasons for us to practice reciprocity in the article below. If you haven't read this, or any of Judey's wonderful pieces, then I'd suggest you give her work a go. Even if you have read her work before, it wouldn't hurt to go back and refresh yourself with her writing.

The article below is one everyone should read by Ms Judey. Especially if you ever feel like you're not gaining followers fast enough. It highlights why we should concentrate on Quality, not Quantity.

Because there seem to be so many who don't know what the word means.

Yes going back and reading after you get a comment is kind on Vocal. I am just catching up after a bout of illness. Sorry I have been MIA

All of this is sooooo valid!! It's literally the "You get what you give rule", nothing more complicated than that!! Loved this MC!! A belated congrats on third place in the leaderboard placement a few weeks ago (I was away and am just catching up now)!!

Well-written, Mother! I especially loved the last line!

  • Excellent acrostic and informative read… I was oblivious to the whinging.😳 Thankfully, my daughter encouraged me to reciprocate reads & comments. I find that to be almost as enjoyable as writing πŸ€—. Early on, my son said β€œIt doesn’t matter if people don’t read your stuff as long as you’re having fun.” So true.βœ…

Its funny, I do not worry about getting reads or comments because I write as a hobby. I am not trying to compete with anyone.

I fully believe that a writing platform is for entertaining all sorts of this and that. a bit of trouble makes it all the more interesting...but yes, more reading needs to be done, I need to do more myself, so does everyone else.

Once trust is built, hard to ignore the articles of a writer. It's all about emotions.

So well said! And I couldn't agree more about quality vs quantity! Reciprocity is certainly a it takes 2 to tango way of interacting on a platform such as Vocal! I felt so bad when somehow I managed to unsubscribe from a few of my favs because I hate not showing up for great writers and people who do me the courtesy!

Amen! I see so much of this happening (and I saw the same on Medium a few months back when they changed their system). Some people are here for the money, but I say better for us if they disappear and we're left with the writers who are actually here to write and to be a part of a community if they want. The rest is just bonus.

This was a good reminder to us all…. Also thank you for all the work you do on the ViM page.

Great poem! We need to be supporting each other. I've been a bit MIA lately though, so how new is this leaderboard change anyway?

  • Euan Brennan7 months ago

Oh no, I hope no one's ticked you off, MC! πŸ’— When I first joined Vocal, comments weren't even a thing. Upon coming back, it's nice to see such a wonderful community. I'm more of a reader than a poster, anyway (too nervous to share most of what I write, haha), and I enjoy reading all these talented creators.

I couldn't agree with this more! I've taken the time to read other pieces and I'm now proud to say I'm quite happy with the level of comments I get on my stories :-)

I'll admit, I haven't been here as much as I used to be, so I haven't really seen the complaints. Thanks for writing this MC. It's a great and likely needed reminder that we're all here for same thing - to share our work and support others. πŸ€—

A good reminder of the old adage that you get what you give. Definitely something that I have to be better at remembering.

  • Judey Kalchik 7 months ago

The more things change the more they stay the same! I write that first one four years ago and I still stand by it. Thank you for sharing!

This made me think back to my early days when I posted but never read, because I didn't have time. What a fool I was! As I started getting comments and recognition, I realized the value of the interaction with other writers. I started finding inspiration in the amazing work of other Vocal creators. And now I comment to help encourage others never to give up. As it turns out, we're not really competing against each other. The more we support each other, the bigger the pie grows so we can all enjoy a bite or two.

  • Reciprocity is what makes this work, though I know I am not supportive enough. I do hate when people post and start "Read My Latest Story", that makes sure I won't read it. Excellent acrostic

It always amuses me when people complain on this platform for whatever reason. I see it as a place to put your stories out and engage with people you find interesting, stimulating and supportive. If you reciprocate it makes it even better. No one can force people to read their stuff, that’s not how it works. Great word for the acrostic, Sharon!

  • Tim Carmichael7 months ago

That's a wonderful Acrostic poem! I do complain, but I do try and read other people's work and comment. Thanks for reminding us we are all here for the same reason.
