white is not a color

it is the absence of color

I am not white

though I am identified as so

my ancestors

the Irish and Italians

the Moors, the Asians

the Hispanic, the Israelis, the Indians

the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Turks

and all the ones I know not about

have brought much in the way

of nuances to make up most

of the colors of my

skin

so why not call me

pink and brown and

yellow and orange

and blue and purple

and black and red

and why not admit

that none of us are

anything other

than

people of color
