White in Wyoming

Small town girl reflecting

By Nova RaePublished 5 years ago 1 min read

Here I am

White in Wyoming .

Viewing our world.

Looking into the whiteness of

Myself .

Am I that person?

Who doesn’t really see themselves ,

Thinking I see the colors in

Black,

Brown,

Red.

But

I don’t

Not really.

I am a rainbow girl.

Coming into my own

In the 90’s.

So rainbow.

So proud.

So expressed.

So open?

But I try to see,

Your resolve,

Your strife,

Your persecution.

I am a

Coward of color.

Never standing.

Here I am

White ,

In Wyoming .

Such an absence of color in me,

Such a space of loss,

Such a lack of commitment.

And you

So full of color,

Of brightness ,

Of community .

I am white,

Lost,

In the lack

Of my own heritage.

I am white in Wyoming

Understanding

My own ignorance.

But my eyes

Are opening

To a sunrise.
