When We Were Kings and Queens
Losing Childhood Friends
We were kings and queens once
the grove my palace
the cove yours
We held court
hidden in the highest branches
that agreed to hold us
We wined and dined
on fish of gold
and sparkling ciders
We ran
hand in hand
We spoke to the earth
and solved all arguments
with wildflowers
We ran our world
ruled in tandem
But at some point
when I whispered your name
on the wind
you no longer answered the call
Our kingdoms
left untouched
fell to ruin
I tried
ruling alone
and I tried
to replace you
but the cove was yours
and like my grove
would listen to no one
but its ruler
For years
I'd call
just in case you'd answer
but now
the cove and grove are gone
and not even the ruins
are left to rule over

Feels bittersweet for me, especially the ending when you said "not even the ruins are left to rule over." I loved it.
