When the Words Leave
(this bit is hard - if i had an extra line it would be in the poem.....)

i don’t have enough for a book
but i think i could manage a short story
i just wanted to find more of myself
i was never loading for glory
some will find a peace in my words
some will always find war
what’s the point of being nil all
if no one’s keeping the score
what’s the point of compensating
for a condition previously defined
committed to paper or a silicon wafer
only then do the words leave my mind
there is no less
there is no loss
there is nothing to mourn or grieve
this is what happens
this is when the words leave
when i think of all the clever things
i’ve ever thought or uttered aloud
wish i’d had could have had the ability then
to save them to the cloud
should have had that piece of paper
should have had that pen
those words could have been saved for ever
so then i could have shared them again
there is no half
there is no full
there is nothing up my sleeve
this is simply my process
this is when the words leave
got just enough for an anecdote
peppered with humorous lies
my intent is not to obfuscate
i have nothing left to hide
i just twist and i squeeze
i prod and i poke
it might be insightful
it might be a joke
there is no happy
there is no sad
there is just what i believe
this is just how it happens
this is when the words leave

I love this one
I think this one might be my favourite 😁 How did I miss it until now??
At the first instance of “this is when the words leave”, I smiled and savored the way you wrote the line and how it got to the core of your poem. That it repeated, icing on the cake. This is a fun exploration into those inopportune moments when an idea strikes and there is no way to capture it. Happens to me all the time! I really liked the pace and energy of the piece, the rhyme and rhythm too. 👏👏
Brenton, this was a really beautiful piece about self discovery. My favourite line is “ i just wanted to find more of myself”, I love it because I feel like that’s what writing does to us. It helps us discover more from ourselves and heal from our past. This poem was so relatable and heartfelt! You really did a beautiful job of capturing what it feels like to be a writer! 😊
Well.
I love this poem! To tell the truth, everyone has idea for a book. The biggest obstacle I find is to find the right time to write. The idea itself is not enough, it’s the flow and the right words that write books.
