What the Light Protects

Through the Night

What the Light Protects
Photo by Anne Nygård on Unsplash

Don't let the flame go out

Displayed proudly in the front window

Defiant in the face of darkness that lurks and creeps

Stalking, lumbering, salivating at the scent of youth

See that shadow move?

Hear that quiet whisper?

Don't listen, lest it grow clearer,

Demanding the light's demise,

Tempting with the promise of your heart's desire

A lost love, unrivaled wealth or power, beauty to make the Moon herself grow jealous,

Illusions

In the dark, there is only death,

The abyss that hungers and is never filled

The weeping and gnashing of teeth

In the light is the hope of another tomorrow

Protect the lantern's glow

I love how the lantern becomes both a symbol of hope and defiance against the darkness.
