What Came First the Chicken or the Egg

What came first the chicken or egg

a puzzle that makes my mind beg

did feathers appear before the shell

or did yolk pop out and ring the bell

The chicken says I was here from the start

the egg just laughs with a stubborn heart

one clucks loud the other just rolls

both of them chasing impossible goals

I tried to ask the farmer next door

he just shrugged and muttered unsure

I asked my dog he wagged his tail

then wandered off sniffing the garden rail

So I gave up and cooked some toast

and ate both things that argued most

I asked the chicken but he just looked

laid an egg then just clucked

The egg just winked as if to say

Stop worrying and eat, it’s a new day

And I laughed so hard I nearly cried
